Plastic responses to past environments shape adaptation to novel selection pressures.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

Molecular Ecology and Evolution Group, School of Environmental and Natural Sciences, Bangor University, Bangor LL57 2UW, United Kingdom.

Phenotypic plasticity may pave the way for rapid adaptation to newly encountered environments. Although it is often contested, there is growing evidence that initial plastic responses of ancestral populations to new environmental cues may promote subsequent adaptation. However, we do not know whether plasticity to cues present in the ancestral habitat (past-cue plasticity) can facilitate adaptation to novel cues.

Coastal reefs benefit the survival and growth of mobile organisms by providing shelter and increased food availability. Under increasing pressure from human activities, the coverage of subtidal reefs has decreased along the world's coasts. This decline is motivating efforts to restore these important habitats by re-introducing hard substrates into the coastal zone.

Roots and early routes of neuroendocrinology.

Carl C. Speidel (1919) and Ernst Scharrer (1928) were privileged witnesses of the encounter between neurons and hormones, a biological phenomenon that had been occurring in nature during millions of years of evolution, as Berta Scharrer started to unfold since 1935 on. The story of neurosecretion is intimately associated to that of the hypothalamus, such a "marvellous region", as Wolfgang Bargmann (1975) called it.

This study provides a detailed characterization of the AA5083 aluminum alloy, surface, and interface over 6 months of immersion in seawater, employing techniques such as SEM/EDX, GIXRD, μ-Raman and XPS. The purpose was to evaluate the evolution of the biomineralization process that occurs on the Al-Mg alloy. By investigating the specific conditions that favor the in situ growth of layered double hydroxide (LDH) during seawater immersion as a result of biomineralization, this research provides insights into marine biomineralization, highlighting its potential as an innovative and sustainable strategy for corrosion protection.
