Relative fire-proneness of land cover types in the Brazilian Atlantic forest.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

CE3C-Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes & CHANGE, Global Change and Sustainability Institute, Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa, Campo Grande, C2, Piso 5, 1749-016, Lisboa, Portugal. Electronic address:

Fires are increasingly affecting tropical biomes, where landscape-fire interactions remain understudied. We investigate the fire-proneness-the likelihood of a land use or land cover (LULC) type burning more or less than expected based on availability-in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (AF). This biodiversity hotspot is increasingly affected by fires due to human activities and climate change.

Impacts of climate change on storm event-based flow regime and channel stability of urban headwater streams.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Tetra Tech, Inc., P.O. Box 14409, Research Triangle Park, NC, 27709, United States. Electronic address:

Due to the recent improved availability of global and regional climate change (CC) models and associated data, the projected impact of CC on urban stormwater management is well documented. However, most studies are based on simplified design storm analysis and unit-area runoff models; evaluations of the long-term, continuous hydrologic response of extensive stormwater control measures (SCM) implementation under future CC scenarios are limited. Moreover, channel stability in response to CC is seldom evaluated due to the input data required to develop a long-term, continuous sediment transport model.

Pathophysiological Significance of α-Synuclein in Sympathetic Nerves: In Vivo Observations.

Neurology

February 2025

From the Autonomic Medicine Section, Clinical Neurosciences Program, Division of Intramural Research, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH, Bethesda, MD.

Background And Objectives: Lewy body diseases (LBDs) such as Parkinson disease (PD) feature increased deposition of α-synuclein (α-syn) in cutaneous sympathetic noradrenergic nerves. The pathophysiologic significance of sympathetic intraneuronal α-syn is unclear. We reviewed data about immunoreactive α-syn, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH, a marker of catecholaminergic fibers), and the sympathetic neurotransmitter norepinephrine (NE) in skin biopsies from control participants and patients with PD, the related LBD pure autonomic failure (PAF), the non-LBD synucleinopathy multiple system atrophy (MSA), or neurologic postacute sequelae of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (neuro-PASC).

Data-Driven Improvement of Local Hybrid Functionals: Neural-Network-Based Local Mixing Functions and Power-Series Correlation Functionals.

J Chem Theory Comput

January 2025

Technische Universitát Berlin, Institut für Chemie, Theoretische Chemie/Quantenchemie, Sekr. C7, Straße des 17. Juni 135, Berlin D-10623, Germany.

Local hybrid functionals (LHs) use a real-space position-dependent admixture of exact exchange (EXX), governed by a local mixing function (LMF). The systematic construction of LMFs has been hampered over the years by a lack of exact physical constraints on their valence behavior. Here, we exploit a data-driven approach and train a new type of "n-LMF" as a relatively shallow neural network.

Introduction: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) also known as Kala-azar is one of the neglected tropical diseases (NTD) of public health importance. Despite being a disease of a long history, the condition remains poorly studied especially in East Africa. For instance, whereas, the geographical location of the disease is known, there is a stark paucity of data on the burden, risk factors and clinical outcomes of this contribution in Northeastern Uganda.
