This article reviews the historical origins of central cord syndrome (CCS), the mechanism of injury, pathophysiology, and clinical implications. CCS is the most common form of incomplete spinal cord injury. CCS involves a spectrum of neurologic deficits preferentially affecting the hands and arms. Evidence suggests that in the twenty-first century CCS has become the most common form of spinal cord injury overall. In an era of big data and the need to standardize this particular diagnosis to unite outcome data, we propose redefining CCS as any adult cervical spinal cord injury in the absence of fracture/dislocation.

Patients' perspectives of receiving an early vocational rehabilitation following major traumatic injury.

Disabil Rehabil

March 2025

Monash-Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre, School of Psychological Sciences, Monash University, Clayton, Australia.

Purpose: Return to work (RTW) after a major traumatic injury (MTI; traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multi-trauma orthopaedic injury) is an important rehabilitation outcome. This study aimed to explore the experience of early vocational rehabilitation (EVR) after MTI, and RTW barriers/facilitators.

Methods: Adopting a qualitative design, 24 people with MTI were interviewed about participating in the Early Intervention Vocational Rehabilitation Service (EIVRS).

Neurotransmitters' white matter mapping unveils the neurochemical fingerprints of stroke.

Distinctive patterns of brain neurotransmission frame determinant circuits for behavior. Understanding the relationship between their damage and the cognitive impairment provoked by brain lesions could provide insights into the pathophysiology and therapeutics of disabling disorders, like stroke. Yet, the challenges of neurotransmitter circuits mapping in vivo have hampered this investigation.

Objective: To assess the relationship between sensor-derived features and upper extremity function in individuals with acute and chronic cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI) and to assess the reproducibility of these features in chronic cSCI.

Design: Prospective, longitudinal study. Participants completed the Capabilities of Upper Extremity Test (CUE-T) - a measure of upper extremity function - at two time points, four weeks apart, while wearing a wrist-worn inertial measurement unit (IMU) device on their most-used upper extremity.

Background And Purpose: Stroke survivors with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) face heightened cardiovascular risks, which are exacerbated by sedentary behaviour (SB). Despite existing interventions, there remains a gap in the literature regarding effective strategies to reduce SB and increase physical activity (PA). The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility and safety of the 12-week 'Everyday Life is Rehabilitation' (ELiR) intervention comprising recruitment, adherence, practicality, and implementation into everyday life.

Study DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.ObjectivesMeta-analysis was used to evaluate the association between traumatic spinal cord injury and mental disorders, psychological disorders, and dementia onset, and to provide a scientific basis for the prevention of traumatic spinal cord injury.MethodsA computerized search of English databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and other English databases for retrospective studies on the associations between traumatic spinal cord injury and psychiatric disorders, mental illnesses, and dementia was carried out within a timeframe of from the creation of the databases to 7 April 2024, and two researchers independently carried out the screening of the literature, extracted and collated the baseline and endpoint indicators, and assessed the quality of the literature, before conducting meta-analysis by using the Stata 15.
