The human microbiome, the community of microorganisms that reside on and inside the human body, is critically important for health and disease. However, it is influenced by various factors and may vary among individuals residing in distinct geographic regions. In this study, 220 samples, consisting of sterile swabs from palmar skin and oral and nasal cavities were collected from Chinese Han individuals living in Shanghai, Chifeng, Kunming, and Urumqi, representing the geographic regions of east, northeast, southwest, and northwest China.

Although diet is a substantial determinant of the human gut microbiome, the interplay between specific foods and microbial community structure remains poorly understood. Coffee is a habitually consumed beverage with established metabolic and health benefits. We previously found that coffee is, among >150 items, the food showing the highest correlation with microbiome components.

The intestinal epithelium serves as a physical and functional barrier against harmful substances, preventing their entry into the circulation and subsequent induction of a systemic immune response. Gut barrier dysfunction has recently emerged as a feature of ageing linked to declining health, and increased intestinal membrane permeability has been shown to promote heightened systemic inflammation in aged hosts. Concurrent with age-related changes in the gut microbiome, the thymic microenvironment undergoes a series of morphological, phenotypical and architectural alterations with age, including disorganisation of the corticomedullary junction, increased fibrosis, increased thymic adiposity and the accumulation of senescent cells.

Article Synopsis
  • * In experiments using Wistar rats, antibiotics led to increased miscarriages and reduced weight gain, while offspring exhibited impaired neurodevelopment and increased neuroinflammation.
  • * The study suggests that caution is needed when using antibiotics during pregnancy due to potential long-term effects on the brain development of children, highlighting the need for future research on preventive measures like probiotics.

Article Synopsis
  • Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) impact both oral and gut microbiomes, with previous research mainly focused on gut dysbiosis, leaving oral microbiomes relatively neglected.
  • This study analyzed the microbiomes of 32 participants (17 with cognitive impairment (CI) and 15 without (NC)) predominantly from the Hispanic population in San Antonio, using gene sequencing on stool and saliva samples to identify differences and associations with clinical measurements like fasting glucose and blood cholesterol.
  • Results showed no significant clinical differences between CI and NC groups but revealed that CI participants had higher levels of certain oral bacteria and lower levels of gut bacteria with anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting potential distinct microbiome patterns in ADRD without finding synergistic effects between oral
