Abbreviations are very frequent in medical and health documents but they convey opaque semantics. The association with their expanded forms, like Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for COPD, may help their understanding. Yet, several abbreviations are ambiguous and have expanded forms possible. We propose to disambiguate the abbreviations in order to associate them with the proper expansion for a given context. We treat the problem through supervised categorization. We create reference data and test several algorithms. The descriptors are collected from lexical and syntactic contexts of abbreviations. The training is done on sentences containing expanded forms of abbreviations. The test is done on corpus built manually, in which the meaning of abbreviations is defined according to their contexts. Our approach shows up to 0.895 F-measure on training data and 0.773 on test data.

Pseudouridine (Ψ) is an abundant RNA chemical modification that plays critical biological functions. Current Ψ detection methods are limited in identifying Ψs at base-resolution in U-rich sequence contexts, where Ψ occurs frequently. The addition of hydrogen to nitrogen facilitates the formation of nitride phases in the plasma nitriding processes of stainless steels, though it also induces the deterioration of their mechanical properties. This study presents a hydrogen-free plasma nitriding process for fabricating a nitrogen-expanded austenite phase (γ) on an AISI 316 stainless steel surface. The steel substrate was nitrided in N-Ar plasma with various gas compositions discharged by radio frequency (RF) and direct current (DC) modes.

The failure mode of thin-walled C-channel beams typically manifests as premature local buckling of the compression flange, leading to insufficient utilization of material strength in both the flange and the web. To address this issue, this study adopts the approach of increasing the number of bends to reinforce the flange and adding V-shaped stiffeners in the middle of the web to reduce the width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements, thereby delaying local buckling and allowing for greater plastic deformation. However, the challenge lies in the irregular cross-sectional shape and complex buckling patterns.

Bead-foaming technology effectively addresses production cycles, polymerization control, and cellular structure defects in conventional bulk foaming, especially in high-performance PMI foams. In this work, highly expandable PMI beads were synthesized based on the aqueous suspension polymerization of methacrylic acid-methacrylonitrile-tert-butyl methacrylate (MAA-MAN-tBMA) copolymers. The suspension polymerization was stabilized by reducing the solubility of MAA by the salting-out effect and replacing formamide (a common PMI foaming agent) with tBMA.
