AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Objectives: This study investigated the effects of different implant surface properties on the biological behavior of Schwann cells.

Methods: Schwann cells (SCs) were cultured on three types of implant surfaces including smooth polished (SMO), sand-blasted, large grit, acid-etched (SLA), and chemically-modified SLA (modSLA). At different time points, the morphology and adhesion of SCs on the implant surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope. Cell proliferation activity was detected by MTT method. The expression levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Changes in the mRNA levels of NGF and BDNF were detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Results: SCs adhered, stretched, and proliferated well on the three types of implant surfaces. On the 3rd, 5th, and 7th days, the OD values of the SMO group were higher than those of the SLA group and the modSLA group, and the difference was statistically significant (<0.05). On the 3rd day, the expression and mRNA levels of NGF and BDNF in the SLA group and the modSLA group were higher than those in the SMO group (<0.05); in particular, the levels in the modSLA group were higher than those in the SLA group (<0.05).

Conclusions: Different implant surface properties have different effects on the biological behavior of SCs. Proliferation of SCs is significantly promoted by smooth surface, while secretion and gene expression of neurotrophic factors are significantly promoted by modSLA surface at early stage.

Research on hydroxyapatite (HAP) coatings for bone tissue applications has been investigated for decades due to their significant osteoconductive and bioactivity properties. HAP closely resembles the mineral component of human bone, making it ideal for biomedical applications such as implants. This study investigates the synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAP-NPs) via the microemulsion method, which is essential for creating HAP coatings on the Ti-6Al-4V substrate.

Breast implant silicone exposure induces immunogenic response and autoimmune markers in human periprosthetic tissue.

Biomaterials

December 2024

Institut de Science des Matériaux de Mulhouse (IS2M), UMR 7361 CNRS/, Université de Haute Alsace (UHA), 15 rue Jean Starcky, 68057, Mulhouse Cedex, France. Electronic address:

Silicone-based breast implants are commonly used, but there are concerns about their long-term safety. While implantation results in the formation of a periprosthetic tissue that isolates the implant from the rest of the host body, silicone can leak and reach surrounding tissues. We combined histological analysis and gene expression profiling (RNA sequencing) of samples from human patients with silicone breast implants with different fillers (silicone or serum), surface topographies and/or shell rupture, and performed systematic cross-comparisons.

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) have at least three distinct states: naïve pluripotency that represents the cellular states of the pre-implantation epiblast cells, primed pluripotency that represents the cellular states of the post-implantation epiblast cells, and formative pluripotency that represents a developmental continuum between naïve and primed pluripotency. Various cell surface markers have been used to define and analyze primed and naïve hPSCs within heterogeneous populations. However, not much is known about common cell surface markers for the different pluripotent states of hPSCs.

Biomaterial-assisted therapeutic strategies enable precise modulation to direct endogenous cellular responses and harness regenerative capabilities for nerve repair. However, achieving effective cellular engagement during nerve remodeling remains challenging. Herein, a novel composite nerve guidance conduit (NGC), the GelMA/PLys@PDA-Fe@PLCL conduit is developed by combining aligned poly(l-lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) nanofibers modified with polydopamine (PDA), ferrous iron (Fe⁺), and polylysine (PLys) with aligned methacrylate-anhydride gelatin (GelMA) hydrogel nanofibers.

Objective: To explore weight-bearing stability of Pilon fracture fixed by external fixator.

Methods: Six ankle bone models (right side) and 4 pairs (8 ankle cadaver specimens) were selected. Pilon fracture model was prepared by using the preset osteotomy line based on Ruedi Allgower Pilon fracture type.
