Potassium Channels in the Transition from Fetal to the Neonatal Pulmonary Circulation.

Int J Mol Sci

April 2022

Experimental Anaesthesiology, Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Medical University of Graz, Auenbruggerplatz 5, 8036 Graz, Austria.

The transition from the fetal to the neonatal circulation includes dilatation of the pulmonary arteries (PA) and closure of the Ductus Arteriosus Botalli (DAB). The resting membrane potential and various potassium channel activities in smooth muscle cells (SMC) from fetal and neonatal PA and DAB obtained from the same species has not been systematically analyzed. The key issue addressed in this paper is how the resting membrane potential and the whole-cell potassium current (IK) change when PASMC or DABSMC are transitioned from hypoxia, reflecting the fetal state, to normoxia, reflecting the post-partal state.

T helper cell immunity in pregnancy and influence on autoimmune disease progression.

J Autoimmun

July 2021

Institute of Liver Studies, King's College Hospital, London, SE5 9RS, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Pregnancy presents the maternal immune system with a unique immunological challenge since it has to defend against pathogens while tolerating paternal allo-antigens expressed by fetal tissues. T helper (Th) cells play a central role in modulating immune responses and recent advances have defined distinct contributions of various Th cell subsets throughout each phase of human pregnancy, while dysregulation in Th responses show association with multiple obstetrical complications. In addition to localized decidual mechanisms, modulation of Th cell immunity during gestation is mediated largely by oscillations in sex hormone concentrations.

Metabolic and molecular responses to calcium soap of fish oil fed to ewes during peripartal period.

Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand)

October 2017

Department of Animal and Poultry Science, College of Aburaihan, University of Tehran, Pakdasht, Tehran, Iran.

It has been shown that n-3 long chain fatty acids (n-3 LCFA) are involved in energy/lipid metabolisms, reproductive parameters, and molecular regulations leading to maintained homeostasis. We hypothesized that supplementation of peripartal diets with fish oil (FO), as a source of n-3 LCFA, could improve energy balance and modulate metabolic pressure in a sheep model. Prepartum ewes (n = 24) were fed control (CON) or calcium soap of fish oil (FO) supplemented-diet from four weeks before until three weeks after parturation.

The management of pediatric airway pathology can be challenging and requires a dedicated team, consisting of thoracic surgeons, phoniatricians, logopedics, pediatricians and anesthetists. It necessitates a tailored treatment approach for each individual patient in order to address the minor variances that exist between cases. The majority of pediatric airway problems are a sequela of prematurity and prolonged post-partal intubation/tracheostomy.
