is a powerful model organism for cell and developmental biology research. Recently, precise gene-editing methods such as CRISPR-Cas9 have allowed facile creation of mutants. The ability to raise and maintain lines of wild-type and mutant animals through all life stages is thus critical for researchers using this model organism. The long fertile life (>8-10 yr) and relatively hardy nature of makes this a straightforward process. Environmental parameters such as water temperature, pH, and conductivity often vary slightly among husbandry protocols. However, the stability of these variables is essential for rearing success. This protocol describes conditions to optimally raise and maintain from embryos to adulthood.

Climate change could amplify weak synchrony in large marine ecosystems.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66045.

Climate change is increasing the frequency of large-scale, extreme environmental events and flattening environmental gradients. Whether such changes will cause spatially synchronous, large-scale population declines depends on mechanisms that limit metapopulation synchrony, thereby promoting rescue effects and stability. Using long-term data and empirical dynamic models, we quantified spatial heterogeneity in density dependence, spatial heterogeneity in environmental responses, and environmental gradients to assess their role in inhibiting synchrony across 36 marine fish and invertebrate species.

Background: Large language models (LLMs) have been proposed as valuable tools in medical education and practice. The Chinese National Nursing Licensing Examination (CNNLE) presents unique challenges for LLMs due to its requirement for both deep domain-specific nursing knowledge and the ability to make complex clinical decisions, which differentiates it from more general medical examinations. However, their potential application in the CNNLE remains unexplored.

Protocol for applying Tumor Treating Fields in mouse models of cancer using the inovivo system.

Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) are electric fields clinically approved for cancer treatment, delivered via arrays attached to the patient's skin. Here, we present a protocol for applying TTFields to torso orthotopic and subcutaneous mouse tumor models using the inovivo system. We guide users on proper system component connections, study protocol design, mouse fur depilation, array application, and treatment condition adjustment and monitoring.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) represents the second cause of vaginal infections in childbearing-age women. It mainly affects the vulva and vagina; however, other organs can be compromised, with consequences that are not well known yet. To evaluate the ability of Candida albicans, inoculated into the vaginal lumen of mice, to migrate to the uterus and ovaries.

The Gut in Critical Illness.

Curr Gastroenterol Rep

December 2025

Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin, 8701 West Watertown Plank Road, 8th Floor: HUB for Collaborative Medicine, Milwaukee, WI, 53226, USA.

Purpose Of Review: The purpose of this narrative review is to describe the mechanisms for gut dysfunction during critical illness, outline hypotheses of gut-derived inflammation, and identify nutrition and non-nutritional therapies that have direct and indirect effects on preserving both epithelial barrier function and gut microbiota during critical illness.

Recent Findings: Clinical and animal model studies have demonstrated that critical illness pathophysiology and interventions breach epithelial barrier function and convert a normally commensal gut microbiome into a pathobiome. As a result, the gut has been postulated to be the "motor" of critical illness and numerous hypotheses have been put forward to explain how it contributes to systemic inflammation and drives multiple organ failure.
