is a powerful model system for cell and developmental biology in part because frogs produce thousands of eggs and embryos year-round. For cell biological studies, egg extracts can mimic many processes in a cell-free system. For developmental biology, embryos are a premier system, combining cut-and-paste embryology with modern gene manipulation tools. are particularly suited to genetic studies because of their diploid genome, as compared to the tetraploid genome of When collecting eggs, there are differences in timing of steps, amounts of hormone administered, and handling of females between these species. In this protocol, females are induced with a hormone that stimulates ovulation, and then eggs are collected. To administer the ovulation hormone and express eggs, it is necessary to be comfortable with handling frogs. Proficient handling of requires practice, as they are relatively small, active, and slippery.

Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species regulate acetyl-CoA flux between cytokine production and fatty acid synthesis in effector T cells.

Genetic and environmental factors shape an individual's susceptibility to autoimmunity. To identify genetic variations regulating effector T cell functions, we used a forward genetics screen of inbred mouse strains and uncovered genomic loci linked to cytokine expression. Among the candidate genes, we characterized a mitochondrial inner membrane protein, TMEM11, as an important determinant of Th1 responses.

JA and ABA signaling pathways converge to protect plant regeneration in stress conditions.

In cuttings, detached leaves or stems are exposed to many stresses during the root regeneration process. Here, we show that the detached Arabidopsis thaliana leaf can tolerate mild osmotic stress and still regenerate roots. Under stress conditions, wounding and stress upregulate the jasmonate (JA) signaling pathway transcription factor gene MYC2 and the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway transcription factor gene ABA INSENSITIVE5 (ABI5).

Delayed motor development is an early clinical sign of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). However, changes at the neural circuit level that underlie early motor differences are underexplored. The striatum, the principal input nucleus of the basal ganglia, plays an important role in motor learning in adult animals, and the maturation of the striatal circuit has been associated with the development of early motor behaviors.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are important for post-transcriptional RNA processing, including pre-mRNA alternative splicing, mRNA stability, and translation. Several RBPs have been shown to play pivotal roles in the inner ear, whose dysfunction leads to auditory and/or balance impairments. Epithelial splicing-regulatory protein 1 (ESRP1) regulates alternative splicing and mRNA stability, and mutations in gene have been associated with sensorineural hearing loss in humans.

LmCHS1 mediates pro-nymphal cuticle formation in Locusta migratoria embryogenesis.

Research Institute of Applied Biology, Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, PR China. Electronic address:

The pro-nymphal cuticle, serving as a protective structure that facilitates environmental adaptation, is critical for insect embryonic development. However, the mechanisms governing its formation remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the important role of chitin synthase (LmCHS1) in the formation of the pro-nymphal cuticle during embryonic development in Locusta migratoria.
