Soil contamination and crop risks of heavy metal(loid)s are widely reported after the long-term irrigation of treated wastewater, causing an adverse influence on agricultural sustainability. Here, we collected soils after 50 years of wastewater irrigation to cultivate cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.), rape (Brassica chinensis L.), carrots (Daucus carota L.), and potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.), using surface and sprinkler irrigation with freshwater and wastewater. In general, we found the statistically insignificant influence of short-term freshwater irrigation on the soil and vegetable metal(loid) concentrations. Most of the vegetables had potential adverse health risks with the relatively lower risks in carrots and potatoes, and most of the risks were contributed by As and Cd. Nevertheless, we observed negligible health risks for all studied metal(loid)s in potatoes under the freshwater irrigations. Besides, compared to wastewater irrigations, freshwater irrigations produced lower Cd health risks in all four vegetable species. Sprinkler irrigation with freshwater was a favorable approach for reducing the uptake of metal(loid)s from soils and the metal(loid) concentrations in aboveground parts. Our study highlights the possibility of reducing vegetable metal(loid) risks in contaminated farmlands via a combined approach of coupling the short-term decrease in their levels in irrigation water with vegetable species selection.

This study investigates the effect of 100 mg L thymol treatment on the quality of post-harvest peppers stored at 10 °C. The results showed that thymol treatment significantly reduced decay rate, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and saturated fatty acid levels in peppers. Moreover, unsaturated fatty acids, non-enzymatic antioxidants, and antioxidant enzyme levels increased after treatment.

Introduction: Melatonin significantly enhances the tolerance of plants to biotic and abiotic stress, and plays an important role in plant resistance to salt stress. However, its role and molecular mechanisms in eggplant salt stress resistance have been rarely reported. In previous studies, we experimentally demonstrated that melatonin can enhance the salt stress resistance of eggplants.

Infections of multidrug-resistant pathogens including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, cause a high risk of mortality in immunocompromised patients and underscore the need for novel natural antibacterial drugs. In this study, common phytochemicals prevalent in fruits and vegetables have been demonstrated for their ability to inhibit quorum sensing (QS) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 (PA). Ten compounds were screened virtually by molecular docking, among which, daidzein dimethyl ether originally from Albizzia lebbeck showed the most significant inhibitory effect on the formation of biofilm and the accumulation of virulence factors, including elastase, pyocyanin and rhamnolipid in PA.

Significant losses of vegetables and fruits occur at multiple stages, including harvest, sorting, storage, and transportation, primarily due to mechanical damage, pathogen invasion, and the natural process of senescence. To mitigate postharvest decay and maintain superior quality of produce, conventional techniques such as low temperature storage and synthetic fungicide treatment are widely employed. Acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM), an effective plant resistance inducers, has demonstrated its efficacy in protecting against a diverse range of fungal and bacterial pathogens.

Carotenoids, the bright yellow, orange, and red pigments of many fruits and vegetables, are essential components of the human diet as bioactive compounds not synthesized in animals. As a staple crop potato has the potential to deliver substantial amounts of these nutraceuticals despite their lower concentration in tubers compared to edible organs of other plant species. Even small gains in tuber carotenoid levels could have a significant impact on the nutritional value of potatoes.
