Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, known as Maimonides (Hebrew name is Rambam), lived from 1138 to 1204. He was one of the important philosophers, adjudicators, and physicians of the Jews. Rambam's knowledge of Jewish laws and his being a philosopher helped him in his third discipline, medicine.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that utilizes implanted electrodes and electrical stimulation for the treatment of neurological disorders. In cases where patients present with severe functional impairment while being refractory to less invasive treatment options, DBS is considered "gold standard." Still, DBS-related work is still widely under investigation, with ethical issues arising that may impact a patient's physical and psycho-social status.

Introduction: Despite centuries of joint investigation of philosophy and neurological interventions, a founding account for the philosophy of neurosurgery has yet to be rigorously constructed or defended. This paper reviews recent work on the philosophy of neurosurgery, spanning metaphysics, epistemology, and value theory, to establish a framework and clinical relevance for study in the philosophy of neurosurgery.
Methods: A systematic review of an online database was conducted using the broad search terms, "Philosophy AND (Neurosurgery OR Neurological Surgery).
