Objective: This work presents the design and verification of a simplified measurement setup for wireless remote microphone systems (WRMSs), which has been incorporated into guidelines of the European Union of Hearing Aid Acousticians (EUHA).

Design: Three studies were conducted. First, speech intelligibility scores within the simplified setup were compared to that in an actual classroom. Second, different WRMSs were compared in the simplified setup, and third, normative data for normal-hearing people with and without WRMS were collected.

Study Sample: The first two studies include 40 older hearing impaired and the third study 20 young normal-hearing adults.

Results: Speech intelligibility with WRMS was not different across actual classroom and simplified setup. An analog omnidirectional WRMS showed poorer speech intelligibility and poorer quality ratings than digital WMRSs. The usage of a WRMS in the simplified setup resulted in significantly higher speech intelligibility across all tested background noise levels.

Conclusions: Despite being a simplified measurement setup, it realistically emulates a situation where people are listening to speech in noise from a distance, such as in a classroom or meeting room. Hence, with standard audiological equipment, the individual benefit of WRMSs can be measured and experienced by the user in clinical practice.

Background: Subtotal and total glossectomies for advanced tongue cancer result in significant speech- and swallow-related morbidity, impairing quality of life. This prospective pilot study compares the safety and functional outcomes associated with using a chimeric innervated muscle and fasciocutaneous flap for soft tissue reconstruction.

Materials And Methods: A prospective, non-randomized controlled pilot study evaluated a standardized technique for tongue reconstruction using a chimeric innervated vastus lateralis muscle and anterolateral thigh fasciocutaneous flap.

A man in his late 50s was referred by a speech and language therapist for consideration of a palatal lift prosthesis (PLP) to improve his speech intelligibility. He presented with hypokinetic dysarthria characterised by reduced loudness, breathy voice and hypernasality. The patient had a diagnosis of progressive muscular dystrophy and mobilised in a motorised wheelchair.

Integrating visual features has been proven effective for deep learning-based speech quality enhancement, particularly in highly noisy environments. However, these models may suffer from redundant information, resulting in performance deterioration when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is relatively high. Real-world noisy scenarios typically exhibit widely varying noise levels.

Pitch variation of the fundamental frequency (F0) is critical to speech understanding, especially in noisy environments. Degrading the F0 contour reduces behaviorally measured speech intelligibility, posing greater challenges for tonal languages like Mandarin Chinese where the F0 pattern determines semantic meaning. However, neural tracking of Mandarin speech with degraded F0 information in noisy environments remains unclear.

Wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) and noise reduction both play important roles in hearing aids. WDRC provides level-dependent amplification so that the level of sound produced by the hearing aid falls between the hearing threshold and the highest comfortable level of the listener, while noise reduction reduces ambient noise with the goal of improving intelligibility and listening comfort and reducing effort. In most current hearing aids, noise reduction and WDRC are implemented sequentially, but this may lead to distortion of the amplitude modulation patterns of both the speech and the noise.
