Figure-ground, that is the segmentation of visual information into objects and their surrounding backgrounds, provides structure for visual attention. Recent evidence shows a novel role of vergence eye movements in visual attention. In the present work, vergence responses during figure-ground segregation tasks are psychophysically investigated. We show that during a figure-ground detection task, subjects convergence their eyes. Vergence eye movements are larger in figure trials than in ground trials. In detected figures trials, vergence are stronger than in trials where the figure went unnoticed. Moreover in figure trials, vergence responses are stronger to low-contrast figures than to high-contrast figures. We argue that these discriminative vergence responses have a role in figure-ground.

Virtual reality (VR) can challenge the visual system, leading to temporary oculomotor changes, though the degree of change varies among individuals. While the vergence and accommodation system plays a crucial role in VR perception, it remains unclear whether individuals whose visual functions fall outside clinical norms experience larger changes. In this work, we present two new multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) designs, both based on the silver mean kinoform diffractive lens. We demonstrate that a single aperiodic diffractive profile can be used to create two different MIOLs: one with a kinoform structure and the other with a stepwise profile. Quantitative assessment of the designs was carried out using the through focus modulation transfer function and the area under the modulation transfer function for the prediction of their visual performance.

Cataract surgery involves the implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) to replace the opacified crystalline lens. Monofocal IOLs, the most common type, are intended to have the eye in focus at a given distance, usually at infinity. Simultaneous vision IOLs (SVIOLs) and extended depth of focus (EDOF) aim to minimize postoperative dependence on spectacles by providing either multiple foci or an extended depth of focus.
