An intralaboratory study assessing assay variability and bias for determination of serum total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was conducted by the Vitamin D Standardization Program (VDSP). Thirteen assays for serum total 25(OH)D were evaluated in a single laboratory including 11 unique immunoassays and one liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assay. Fifty single-donor serum samples, including eight samples with high concentrations of 25(OH)D (> 30 nmol/L), were assigned target values for 25(OH)D and 25(OH)D using reference measurement procedures (RMP). Using four replicate measurements for each sample, the mean total percent coefficient of variation (%CV) and mean % bias from the target values were determined for each assay using the 50 single-donor samples and a 42-sample subset, which excluded 8 high 25(OH)D concentration samples, and compared with VDSP performance criteria of ≤ 10 % CV and ≤ ±5 % mean bias. All 12 assays achieved the performance criterion for % CV, and 9 of the 12 assays were within ≤ ±5 % mean bias. The Fujirebio Inc. assay exhibited the lowest %CV and highest percentage of individual measurements within ≤ ±5 % mean bias. Ten immunoassays exhibited changes in response due to the high 25(OH)D samples with Abbott, Biomérieux, DiaSorin, DIAsource, and IDS-iSYS assays having the largest deviations. The Fujirebio Inc. and Beckman Coulter assays were only minimally affected by the presence of the high 25(OH)D samples. Samples with high concentrations of 25(OH)D provided a critical performance test for immunoassays indicating that some assays may not have equal response or recovery for 25(OH)D and 25(OH)D.

Commutability is where the measurement response for a reference material (RM) is the same as for an individual patient sample with the same concentration of analyte measured using two or more measurement systems. Assessment of commutability is essential when the RM is used in a calibration hierarchy or to ensure that clinical measurements are comparable across different measurement procedures and at different times. The commutability of three new Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) for determining serum total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], defined as the sum of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], was assessed through an interlaboratory study.

: Despite frequent references to the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Kazakhstan, a comprehensive synthesis of existing research on this issue among adults is lacking. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to address this gap by determining the mean prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among adults in Kazakhstan. A secondary objective is to evaluate whether the prevalence differs between healthy adults and those with chronic conditions.

The association between early childhood serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and eosinophilic asthma remains unclear. We investigated this association using multicentre prospective data from 584 children with a history of bronchiolitis requiring hospitalisation (high-risk population). Low serum 25(OH)D levels (<20 ng/mL) were associated with increased odds of developing eosinophilic asthma (adjusted OR 2.

Vitamin D status and its determinants in German elite athletes.

Eur J Appl Physiol

January 2025

Department of Exercise Physiology and Sports Therapy, Institute of Sports Science, Justus Liebig University Giessen, Kugelberg 62, 35394, Giessen, Germany.

Purpose: This study investigated elite German athletes to (1) assess their serum 25(OH)D levels and the prevalence of insufficiency, (2) identify key factors influencing serum 25(OH)D levels, and (3) analyze the association between serum 25(OH)D levels and handgrip strength.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 474 athletes (231 female), aged 13-39 years (mean 19.3 years), from ten Olympic disciplines were included.

Age but not vitamin D is related to sarcopenia in vitamin D sufficient male elderly in rural China.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology, The Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, 210028, China.

This study aimed to identify the correlation of serum 25(OH)D level with sarcopenia and its components in Chinese elderly aged 65 years and above from rural areas. A total of 368 Chinese elderly aged 65 years and above in rural areas were enrolled. Indicators of muscle mass and strength, including the appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), skeletal muscle index (SMI) and hand grip strength (HGS) were measured.
