Corosolic acid (CA), a natural triterpenoid, exhibits various biological activities and is often called as plant-derived insulin due to its significant hypoglycemic effects, making it especially beneficial for individuals with diabetes or high blood glucose levels. However, CA has notable in vitro toxicity, low water solubility, and poor pharmacokinetic properties. To address these limitations, a series of CA derivatives were synthesized, resulting in the identification of derivative H26, which demonstrates a significantly enhanced hypoglycemic effect, reduced toxicity, and improved pharmacokinetic characteristics compared to CA.

Enhanced egg white powder through liquid-state ultrasound-heating pretreatment: Properties and digestibility.

Food Chem

December 2024

Institute for Egg Science and Technology, School of Food and Biological Engineering, Chengdu University, Chengdu 610106, Sichuan, China. Electronic address:

Egg white protein's functional properties and digestibility can be significantly affected by processing methods. In this study, a novel combined ultrasound-heating (UH) pretreatment protocol was developed, where liquid egg white was subjected to ultrasonic treatment (0.4 W/mL, 10 min) followed by mild heating (72 °C, 10 min) prior to drying processes.

The biotin-conjugated Fe(III) catecholate complex [Fe(BioL)], Fe(BioL) (BioLH=N-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl)-5-((3aS,4S,6aR)-2-oxohexahydro-1H-thieno[3,4-d]imidazol-4-yl)pentanamide) is reported as targeted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs) to increase the payload for early-stage imaging of tumours. The high spin state and octahedral coordination of the Fe(III) complex are confirmed by EPR spectra and DFT optimized structure, respectively. The overall formation constant (log K) of Fe(BioL) is determined as 45, which is higher than the known, more stable complex [Fe(EDTA)].

Article Synopsis
  • - Fluorescently labeled (strept)avidins are commonly used to detect biotinylated molecules in immunology and histochemistry, but they can also bind to various glycans, including components of blood group antigens and other oligosaccharides.
  • - This binding occurs in a dose-dependent manner, meaning that the presence of certain polymeric glycan conjugates can inhibit this interaction, but monomeric forms do not have the same effect.
  • - The ability of (strept)avidins to bind glycans may lead to inaccuracies in carbohydrate sample analysis, suggesting that researchers should avoid using excessive amounts of (strept)avidin in their experiments to minimize these errors.

Interleukin-6 (IL6) is a cytokine mainly involved in inflammatory processes associated with various diseases, from rheumatoid arthritis and pathogen-caused infections to cancer, where malignant cells exhibit high proliferation and overexpression of cytokines, including IL6. Furthermore, IL6 plays a fundamental role in detecting and differentiating tumor cells, including colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. Therefore, given its range of biological activities and pathological role, IL6 determination has been claimed for the diagnosis/prognosis of immune-mediated diseases.
