In humans, physically attractive faces are measurably, though subtly, asymmetric. As asymmetry increases, it has a negative impact. Medically, asymmetry can be congenital or acquired. Symbolically, it has varied connotations from playfulness and complexity to despair and corruption. In Chinese opera, stylized make-up exaggerates the features, and aspects of the "mask" indicate qualities of the character. The asymmetric faces belong to characters who are corrupt, devious, or evil. In the Dan culture of western Africa, performance masks channel spirits in the community. A spirit with asymmetric facial mask exemplifies ugliness and moral failing. The Nasca culture of South America made generic figures of farmers, deities, and so on, but not of individuals. However, there is evidence of mutual influence between the Nasca and the Wari, with whom they traded. A clay figure apparently representing an individual, or at least a very specific recognized persona, is a ball player with facial asymmetry presumably due to injury. Here the message is one of fierceness and strength. The relative rarity of asymmetric facial depictions compared to symmetric ones is cross-cultural. This implies that asymmetry is special somehow, in all connotations of that term.

Designing advanced materials that effectively mitigate the poor cycle life of battery-type electrodes with high specific capacities is crucial for next-generation energy storage systems. Herein, graphene oxide-ceria (GO-CeO) nanocomposite synthesized via a facile wet chemical route is explored as cathode for high-performance supercapacitors. The morphological analysis suggests fine ceria (CeO) nanoparticles dispersed over ultrathin graphene oxide (GO) sheets while structural studies reveal face-centered cubic phase of CeO in the nanocomposite.

A novel class of bis-8-aryl-isoquinoline () bis-alkylamine iron complexes, Fe()(OTf) and Fe()(OTf) ( = dipyrrolidinyl or = ,'-dimethylcyclohexyl-diamine), for asymmetric oxidation reactions is reported. The scalable divergent synthesis of 8-aryl-3-formylisoquinolines (), the key intermediates in preparing these ligands, enables precise structural and electronic tuning around the metal center. The enantioselective epoxidation and hydroxy carbonylation of conjugated alkenes, mediated by the Fe() catalyst with HO as the oxidant, demonstrates the potential of these redox Fe[N] catalysts in inducing face selection in oxygen transfer transformations.

Traditional tetrahedral-based mid-to-far infrared (MFIR) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals often face limitations due to the optical anisotropy constraints imposed by their highly symmetric structures. In contrast, the relatively rare trigonal pyramidal [TeS] functional unit characterized by its asymmetric structure and stereochemically active lone pair (SCALP), offers improved optical anisotropy, hyperpolarizability and a broader IR transparency range. Despite its potential, synthetic challenges have hindered the development of MFIR NLO crystals that incorporate this unit, with only one example reported to date.

Multimodal sentiment analysis (MSA) aims to use a variety of sensors to obtain and process information to predict the intensity and polarity of human emotions. The main challenges faced by current multi-modal sentiment analysis include: how the model extracts emotional information in a single modality and realizes the complementary transmission of multimodal information; how to output relatively stable predictions even when the sentiment embodied in a single modality is inconsistent with the multi-modal label; how can the model ensure high accuracy when a single modal information is incomplete or the feature extraction performance not good. Traditional methods do not take into account the interaction of unimodal contextual information and multi-modal information.
