Ageing is one of the most important risk factors for chronic health conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases. Inflammation is a feature of ageing, as well as a key pathophysiological mechanism for degenerative diseases. Microglia play multiple roles in the central nervous system; their states entail a complex assemblage of responses reflecting the multiplicity of functions they fulfil both under homeostatic basal conditions and in response to stimuli.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of acute leukemia diagnosed in adults. Despite advances in medical care, the treatment of AML still faces many challenges, such as treatment-related toxicities, that limit the use of high-intensity chemotherapy, especially in elderly patients. Currently, various immunotherapeutic approaches, that is, CAR-T cells, BiTEs, and immune checkpoint inhibitors, are being tested in clinical trials to prolong remission and improve the overall survival of AML patients.

Microglia are the primary innate immune cells of the central nervous system and extensively contribute to brain homeostasis. Dysfunctional or excessive activity of microglia may be associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Therefore, we examined whether aripiprazole and risperidone could influence the expression of the and axes, which are crucial for the regulation of microglial activity and interactions of these cells with neurons.
