Metallic zinc is an ideal anode due to its high theoretical capacity (820 mAh g), low redox potential (-0.762 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode), high abundance and low toxicity. When used in aqueous electrolyte, it also brings intrinsic safety, but suffers from severe irreversibility. This is best exemplified by low coulombic efficiency, dendrite growth and water consumption. This is thought to be due to severe hydrogen evolution during zinc plating and stripping, hitherto making the in-situ formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) impossible. Here, we report an aqueous zinc battery in which a dilute and acidic aqueous electrolyte with an alkylammonium salt additive assists the formation of a robust, Zn-conducting and waterproof SEI. The presence of this SEI enables excellent performance: dendrite-free zinc plating/stripping at 99.9% coulombic efficiency in a Ti||Zn asymmetric cell for 1,000 cycles; steady charge-discharge in a Zn||Zn symmetric cell for 6,000 cycles (6,000 h); and high energy densities (136 Wh kg in a Zn||VOPO full battery with 88.7% retention for >6,000 cycles, 325 Wh kg in a Zn||O full battery for >300 cycles and 218 Wh kg in a Zn||MnO full battery with 88.5% retention for 1,000 cycles) using limited zinc. The SEI-forming electrolyte also allows the reversible operation of an anode-free pouch cell of Ti||ZnVOPO at 100% depth of discharge for 100 cycles, thus establishing aqueous zinc batteries as viable cell systems for practical applications.

Manganese oxides are a promising cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), but thin-film configurations remain underexplored. This study investigates the electrochemical dynamics of 60 nm thin MnO thin films, fabricated via RF magnetron reactive sputtering. It addresses the highest reported capacity (25 mAh/g) in thin film form, stability over 500 cycles, effective performance across varying current rates, surpassing previous studies and challenges such as phase stability, and capacity fading over extended cycling, aiming to enhance uniformity, minimizing diffusion barriers for improved performance.

The development of aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) is hampered by dendrites and side reactions induced by reactive HO. In this study, a hydrated eutectic electrolyte with restrictive water consisting of zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTf)), 1,3-propanediol (PDO), and water is developed to improve the stability of the anode/electrolyte interface in AZMBs via the formation of a water-deficient interface. Additionally, PDO participates in the Zn solvation structure and inhibits the movement of water molecules.

The cyclic stability of aqueous zinc-manganese batteries (ZMBs) is greatly restricted by the side reaction of the anode and the irreversibility of the cathode. In this work, a solid-liquid hybrid electrolyte mixing by traditional ZnSO-based electrolyte and diatomite (denoted as Dtm) is proposed that exhibits good compatibility and reversibility in both the anode interface and the cathode interface. The abundant hydroxyl groups at the anode interface disturb the hydrogen bond network of water molecule, which weakens the corrosion of the active water to Zn anode.

Cellulose has outstanding potential for application in energy storage batteries due to its high temperature resistance, high electrolyte affinity, renewability, and suppression of the shuttle effect, but single cellulose membranes still suffer from problems such as inhomogeneous pore distribution and unstable three-dimensional network structure. In this study, a green and sustainable regenerative cellulose (RC)/sodium alginate (SA) gel electrolyte membrane is developed by sol-gel process, the double crosslinked network scaffold centered on Zn was constructed by the synergistic hydrogen-bonding and metal ion- coordination network, the stable and uniform pore structure was also formed. The obtained RC-SA gel electrolyte membrane exhibits outstanding performance, featuring a dual crosslinked network with abundant pore structure and numerous polar groups that effectively enhance Zn transport, significantly improving battery cycling performance.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are an appealing electrochemical energy storage solution due to their affordability and safety. Significant attention has been focused on vanadium oxide cathode materials for ZIBs, owing to their high specific capacity, unique layered or tunnel structures, and low cost. Compared to traditional methods for preparing and assembling electrode materials, direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering allows direct synthesis and uniform deposition on current collectors, offering advantages such as simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and strong film adhesion.
