Water uptake by freeze-dried potato and soybean powders: experiments and simulations.

J Food Sci Technol

February 2025

Department of Food Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, 4-5-7 Konan, Minato-ku, Tokyo, 108-8477 Japan.

In this study, the water uptake of potato and soybean powders by capillary action and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) experiments was investigated. The potato powder exhibited higher water uptake than the soybean powder, a result which was attributed to the different powder compositions. Potato and soybean powders exhibited different wetting, swelling and dispersion behaviors in water.

Attix free-air chamber correction factors computed using EGSnrc.

Med Phys

January 2025

Department of Medical Physics, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, USA.

Background: A cylindrical free-air chamber, the Attix FAC, is used for absolute air-kerma measurements of low-energy photon beams at the University of Wisconsin Medical Radiation Research Center. Correction factors for air-kerma measurements of specific beams were determined in the 1990s. In order to measure air-kerma rates of beams in development, new correction factors must be computed.

This article presents a systematic review on blockchain-facilitated cybersecurity solutions for Internet of Things (IoT) devices in space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN). First, we identify the objectives and the context of the blockchain-based solutions for SAGIN. Although, typically, the blockchain is primarily used to enhance the trustworthiness of some systems or operations, it is necessary to document exactly in what context the blockchain is used that is specific to the IoT and SAGIN.

Would the Oceans Become Toxic to Humanity Due to Use and Mismanagement of Plastics?

Int J Environ Res Public Health

December 2024

School of Applied Engineering and Technology, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University Heights, Newark, NJ 07102, USA.

The production of plastics and associated products, including microplastics (MPs), has been surging over the past several decades and now poses a grave environmental threat. This is because when not appropriately recycled, incinerated, or disposed of in fully contained landfills, plastic waste manifests as a potent pollutant, with vast amounts finding their way into oceans annually, adversely impacting marine life and ecosystems. Additionally, research also confirms there are direct impacts from MPs on water, air, and soil, impacting ecosystem and human health.

Background: Prehospital emergencies require providers to rapidly identify patients' medical condition and determine treatment needs. We tested whether medics' initial, written impressions of patient condition contain information that can help identify patients who require prehospital lifesaving interventions (LSI) prior to or during transport.

Methods: We analyzed free-text medic impressions of prehospital patients encountered at the scene of an accident or injury, using data from STAT MedEvac air medical transport service from 2012 to 2021.
