Background: Routinely, naked eye and a magnified glass are used to observe the specimens during grossing procedure. Stereomicroscope is a significant adjuvant to examine a variety of specimens and it enables us to examine the surface details of the specimen efficiently.

Aims And Objectives: To assess the role of stereomicroscope in macroscopic examination and its effectiveness in the study of surface details of the specimen, thereby evaluating its role as an effective tool in grossing and histopathological diagnosis.

Materials And Methods: The study sample consisted of routine specimens received by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Government Dental College and Hospital, Hyderabad, between July 15, 2018, and September 15, 2018. All the specimens were photographed under direct daylight ad later examined under stereomicroscope. The images were compared and grossing was carried out. The grossed specimen were processed using standard procedure and histopathological diagnosis was made.

Results: Compared to naked eye, the stereomicroscopic observation of specimens showed better details which helped in proper orientation of the specimen.

Conclusion: Stereomicroscope aids as an adjuvant for proper orientation of the specimen which helps in arriving at an accurate final diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Divergent differentiation in urothelial carcinoma complicates accurate histopathological diagnosis, as traditional cancer features can be sparse, leading to potential oversights by inexperienced pathologists.
  • Recognizing this differentiation is vital not only for establishing a correct diagnosis and preventing the false reporting of rare tumors but also because it influences the classification of the cancer as high-grade, impacting patient treatment and management.
  • A case study of a male patient revealed a high-grade urothelial carcinoma with features resembling primarily colonic-type adenocarcinoma, showcasing the importance of identifying divergent differentiation to rule out metastasis from other organs.

Essentials of macroscopic evaluation of specimens from gastrointestinal tract.

J Clin Pathol

February 2024

Department of Pathology, Division of Anatomic Pathology, UT Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, Texas, USA

An astute macroscopic examination, coupled with correlating the gross findings with clinical indication and operative notes along with judicious, yet all pertinent sectioning for pathological examination is crucial for an accurate histopathological diagnosis, eventually leading to optimal patient care. This succinct review highlights the general concepts that lay the foundation of evaluating and grossing specimens from the luminal gastrointestinal (GI) tract. We also discuss the gross evaluation and sectioning of small therapeutic resections, along with a systematic approach and rationale when grossing and submitting histological sections from larger oncological resections from the luminal GI tract.

Introduction: Mucormycosis is an acute and rapidly progressing opportunistic fungal infection. COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) had re-emerged as a complication of COVID-19 infection during the second wave of the pandemic in 2021. The rhinomaxillary form is a variant of the rhino-cerebral mucormycosis that presents a diagnostic challenge to the dentist and the oral and maxillofacial pathologist.

Significance: Real-time histology can close a variety of gaps in tissue diagnostics. Currently, gross pathology analysis of excised tissue is dependent upon visual inspection and palpation to identify regions of interest for histopathological processing. Such analysis is limited by the variable correlation between macroscopic and microscopic findings.
