Background: Hwa-Byung is a culturally bound syndrome prevalent in Korea, characterized by intense emotional distress and physical symptoms related to suppressed anger. Patients frequently report experiencing chest tightness, heat sensations, and globus pharyngeus (the sensation of a lump in the throat). These physical symptoms often accompany psychological distress and can exacerbate the sense of frustration and helplessness associated with the condition.

Tubuloids are advanced in vitro models obtained from adult human or mouse kidney cells with great potential for modelling kidney function in health and disease. Here, we developed a polarized human and mouse tubuloid epithelium on cell culture inserts, namely Transwell™ filters, as a model of the distal nephron with an accessible apical and basolateral side that allow for characterization of epithelial properties such as leak-tightness and epithelial resistance. Tubuloids formed a leak-tight and confluent epithelium on Transwells™ and the human tubuloids were differentiated towards the distal part of the nephron.

Urolithin A (UA) has demonstrated the ability to stimulate mitophagy and enhance mitochondrial and cellular health in skeletal muscles in humans after oral administration. It is hypothesized that targeted delivery of UA as inhaled dry powders to the lungs will enhance mitochondrial health through mitochondrial biogenesis. This study aimed to engineer inhalable excipient-free powders of UA as dry powder inhalers (DPIs) for targeted pulmonary delivery.

Li Qi Huo Xue Di Wan (LQHXDW), a Chinese herbal medicine, is commonly used to treat symptoms such as palpitations, chest tightness, chest pain, and shortness of breath. However, its potential to reduce ischemia or hypoxia-induced cardiac injury and remodeling, along with the precise mechanisms involved, remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of LQHXDW on cardiac injury and remodeling induced by ischemia or hypoxia, both in vivo and in vitro, and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
