Here we respond to the criticisms leveled against a proposal that suggested an efficient solution to the taxonomic impediment. We clarify some of our objectives and demonstrate that many of the criticisms apply more to traditional approaches to taxonomy rather than to our minimalist approach.

Somatic copy number deletion of chromosome 22q in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

January 2025

S Chanock, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, Laboratory of Genetic Susceptibility, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, United States.

Deletion of the long q arm of chromosome 22 (22qDEL) is the most frequently identified recurrent somatic copy number alteration (SCNA) observed in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Since its role in PTC is not fully understood, we conducted a pooled analysis of genomic characteristics and clinical correlates in 1094 primary tumors from four published PTC genomic studies. The majority of PTC with 22qDEL exhibited arm-level loss of heterozygosity (86%); nearly all PTC with 22qDEL had losses in 22q12 and 13, which together constitute 70% of the q arm.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious viral disease, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It can manifest as mild to severe flu-like and non-flu-like symptoms and signs, which are associated with immune dysfunction and increased mortality. The findings from COVID-19 patients imply a link between immune system abnormalities such as impaired T-cell responses or cytokine imbalances and increased risk for worse clinical outcomes, which has not been fully understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Physical activity enhances liver health and reduces oxidative stress, potentially through the protein irisin, with the study focusing on the gene/protein HSP70 and miR-223a in the context of endurance exercise and irisin injection.
  • A total of 21 mice were divided into three groups (control, endurance training, irisin injection) to analyze gene and protein expression using techniques like real-time PCR and Western blot analysis over an 8-week period.
  • Results showed significant increases in HSP70 expression and serum irisin levels in both the endurance and irisin groups, while miR-223a levels decreased, suggesting that irisin injection could effectively mimic the benefits of prolonged endurance exercise.

Salinity and lead are two important abiotic stresses that limit crop growth and yield. In this study, we assayed the effect of these stresses on tolerant and sensitive maize genotypes. Four-week-old maize plants were treated with 250 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) and 250 µM lead (Pb).
