Nociceptive TRP channels function as molecular target for several antifungal drugs.

Fundam Clin Pharmacol

December 2024

Department of Veterinary Pharmacology, Faculty of Agriculture, Tottori University, Tottori, Japan.

Background/objectives: Topically applied antifungal agents can induce adverse effects, such as pain and irritation. The transient receptor potential (TRP) channels-TRPA1 and TRPV1-mainly expressed in sensory neurons, act as sensors for detecting irritants. This study aims to evaluate the involvement of nociceptive channels in topical antifungal-induced pain and irritation.

Article Synopsis
  • Pityriasis versicolor is a common fungal skin infection, typically treated with keratolytic agents, which are cheap and available over-the-counter, while conventional antifungals are pricier and require prescriptions.
  • The goal of this study was to systematically review and compare the safety and effectiveness of these antifungal treatments against keratolytic agents for managing pityriasis versicolor.
  • The review included data from 8 randomized controlled trials with 617 participants, using statistical analysis to evaluate the outcomes, although publication bias could not be assessed due to the limited number of studies.

Development and Characterization of Econazole Topical Gel.

Gels

November 2023

Department of Pharmaceutics, College of Pharmacy, Najran University, Najran 66462, Saudi Arabia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a new gel formulation of econazole nitrate, an antifungal medication, for treating fungal infections like tinea versicolor, tinea pedis, and tinea cruris, highlighting that gels allow for faster drug delivery than creams or ointments.
  • A mixture of various ingredients, including propylene glycol and Carbopol gel bases, was evaluated for its physical properties, such as pH, viscosity, and appearance, ensuring the formulations were suitable for topical application.
  • Tests showed that the new formulations effectively inhibited fungal growth, unlike a standard blank gel, and their drug release was mainly controlled by diffusion and gel swelling, as analyzed through the Korsmeyer-Peppas
