Organelles called mitochondria divide in at least two contexts: during cell growth and in response to mitochondrial damage. The finding that division is different in these two contexts sheds light on the regulatory pathways involved.

Even today, 'epigenetics' is a rather difficult field to define. The explosive growth of epigenetics over the last twenty years is sometimes seen as a revolutionary event in the life sciences, a paradigm shift that would devalue genetics or the standard view of the evolutionary synthesis. The aim of this paper is to place this controversial issue in its historical context.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become a revolutionary technique in the biomedical field, providing unparalleled sensitivity for the detection and characterization of biological samples. In this review, recent SERS innovations are comprehensively discussed, including advanced substrate materials, different SERS detection strategies, and multimodal approaches that combine SERS with other biotechnologies. Among them, the role of SERS in the accurate diagnosis of tumors is highlighted, which has promoted accurate molecular analysis and real-time monitoring of treatment effects.

December 2024

Center of Excellence in Tissue Engineering, Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, Odisha 769008, India. Electronic address:

Bioglass (Bg) is accepted as a revolutionary material, and doping with strontium (Sr) ions in the Bg network exhibits improved biofunctionality towards bone tissue regeneration and inhibits osteoclast formation. Keeping this in view, the present study focused on the development of chitosan (CS)/gelatin (GE) porous scaffolds incorporated with Sr-doped Bg nanoparticles (nSrBg) for bone tissue engineering applications. The SEM analysis of the fabricated scaffold exhibited that it possessed a homogenous microstructure with an interconnected porous network having pore sizes of 100-300 μm.

Precipitation, solar radiation, and their interaction modify leaf hydraulic efficiency-safety trade-off across angiosperms at the global scale.

In theory, there is a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and safety. However, the strength and direction of this trade-off at the leaf level are not consistent across studies, and habitat climate may impact this trade-off. We compiled a leaf hydraulic efficiency and safety dataset for 362 species from 81 sites world-wide, with 280 paired observations of both traits, and tested whether climate was associated with departure from the proposed trade-off.

Background: Total joint replacement (TJR) of the lumbar spine is a revolutionary procedure that couples the clinical benefits of neural decompression with preservation of natural motion and sagittal balance at the operative level. The TJR procedure involves reconstruction of the entire motion segment using a posterior bilateral transforaminal approach to access the disc space. The TJR implant (MOTUS, 3Spine, Chattanooga, TN, USA) replaces the function of the intervertebral disc and facet joints, performing biomechanically as a new articulation for the resected, degenerated disc and facets.
