Published: May 2021

Background: Surgical intervention for spontaneous pneumothorax typically includes mechanical pleurodesis that frequently utilizes a Bovie scratch pad given its universal presence, low cost and ease of use. The pad is folded on itself after dividing it in half, allowing easier passage through the smaller incisions. However, unintentional foreign body retention may occur during the course of an operation leading to reoperations or even worse complications. This case is reported to raise awareness that dividing the scratch pad may allow the embedded radio-opaque marker to fall out and become retained as a foreign body.

Case Presentation: The patient is a 41 year-old female who presented with shortness of breath secondary to spontaneous pneumothorax. Chest CT scan showed apical blebs. The patient underwent video assisted thorascopic surgery (VATS) with bleb resection and mechanical pleurodesis using a divided and folded bovie scratch pad. Postoperative chest x-ray showed a retained foreign body. Reoperation confirmed this to be the radio-opaque marker of the scratch pad and was removed. The patient did well and was discharged the following day.

Conclusion: Dividing the bovie scratch pad may damage and "weaken" the product allowing the radio- opaque marker to fall out during its use for pleurodesis and should be discouraged. Recommendation is made of using the scratch pad as a whole and not dividing it. Retained radio-opaque marker of bovie scratch pad during VATS mechanical pleurodesis.

Barley β-glucan bioactive films: Promising eco-friendly materials for wound healing.

Int J Biol Macromol

October 2024

Institute of Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB), National Research Council, Viale J.F. Kennedy 54, Mostra d'Oltremare Pad 20, 80125 Naples, Italy.

Mixtures containing β-glucans were extracted from barley, under both mild and high alkaline conditions, to prepare biodegradable films (MA and HA, respectively), as natural dressings with intrinsic therapeutic properties. An in-depth characterization was performed to evaluate the impact of mild and high alkaline conditions on chemical, physicochemical, and biological features for potential use in wound treatments. Both MA and HA films exhibited a good ability to absorb water and simulate wound fluid, which helps maintain optimal tissue hydration.

Influence of Pd-Layer Thickness on Bonding Reliability of Pd-Coated Cu Wire.

Micromachines (Basel)

July 2024

School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Henan Polytechnic University, Jiaozuo 454000, China.

In this paper, three Pd-coated Cu (PCC) wires with different Pd-layer thicknesses were used to make bonding samples, and the influence of Pd-layer thickness on the reliability of bonded points before and after a high-temperature storage test was studied. The results show that smaller bonding pressure and ultrasonic power lead to insufficient plastic deformation of the ball-bonded point, which also leads to small contact area with the pad and low bonding strength. Excessive bonding pressure and ultrasonic power will lead to 'scratch' on the surface of the pad and large-scale Ag spatter.

Deep learning can be used effectively to predict participants' age from brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, and a growing body of evidence suggests that the difference between predicted and chronological age-referred to as brain-predicted age difference (brain-PAD)-is related to various neurological and neuropsychiatric disease states. A crucial aspect of the applicability of brain-PAD as a biomarker of individual brain health is whether and how brain-predicted age is affected by MR image artifacts commonly encountered in clinical settings. To investigate this issue, we trained and validated two different 3D convolutional neural network architectures (CNNs) from scratch and tested the models on a separate dataset consisting of motion-free and motion-corrupted T1-weighted MRI scans from the same participants, the quality of which were rated by neuroradiologists from a clinical diagnostic point of view.

Background: There is increasing evidence that honey has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer effects. This study aims to assess and contrast the cytotoxic, anti-metastatic, and apoptotic effects of Ziziphus jujube honey and commercial honey on MCF7 cells.

Methods And Results: Two honey samples, Ziziphus jujube (JH) and commercial honey (CH), were categorized into high and low groups based on their phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and diastase activity (PAD score).

Tissue factor targeting peptide enhances nanoparticle binding and delivery of a synthetic specialized pro-resolving lipid mediator to injured arteries.

JVS Vasc Sci

Department of Surgery and Cardiovascular Institute, University of California San Francisco, Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Brigham, San Francisco, CA.

Background: Specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPM) such as resolvin D1 (RvD1) attenuate inflammation and exhibit vasculo-protective properties.

Methods: We investigated poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA)-based nanoparticles (NP), containing a peptide targeted to tissue factor (TF) for delivery of 17R-RvD1 and a synthetic analog 17-R/S-benzo-RvD1 (benzo-RvD1) using in vitro and in vivo models of acute vascular injury. NPs were characterized in vitro by size, drug loading, drug release, TF binding, and vascular smooth muscle cell migration assays.
