The outburst of plastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems poses a potential threat to agriculture and food safety. Studies have already provided evidence for the uptake of plastic microparticles by several plant species, accompanied by numerous developmental effects, using fluorescence labelling techniques. Here, we introduce the implementation of confocal Raman spectroscopy, a label-free method, for the effective detection of microplastics (MPs) accumulation in the roots of a common edible root vegetable plant, , after treatment with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) powder. We also demonstrate the concomitant occurrence of phenotypic defects in the polymer-treated plants. We anticipate that this work can provide new insights not only into the extent of the impact this widespread phenomenon has on crop plants but also on the methodological requirements to address it.

Aims: Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging organic pollutants generated by plastic degradation and are ubiquitous in the environment. They can be accumulated through the food webs and enter the human body through dietary intake, posing health risks. The main target organs of NP accumulation are the lungs, liver, heart, and kidneys.

Microplastics (MPs) easily migrate into deeper soil layers, posing potential risks to subterranean habitats and groundwater. However, the mechanisms governing the vertical migration of MPs in soil, particularly aged MPs, remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the transport of MPs under varying MPs properties, soil texture and hydrology conditions.

The physical abrasion of plastics from simple everyday entered the food chain, with associated risks recently emphasized. Although many studies have reported the adverse effects of microplastics (MPs) on human, the reproductive implications of continuous exposure to physically abraded polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-MPs remain unexplored. Ingestion of physically abraded PET-MPs (size range: 50-100 µm) in mice from 5 to 34 weeks of age at an annual intake relevant dose of MPs (5 mg week) significantly impaired male reproductive function.

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries has become a common concern of the whole society, with a large number of studies on recycling management and recycling technology, but there is relatively little study on the pollution release during the recycling process. Pollution will restrict the healthy development of the recycling industry, which makes relevant research very significant. This paper monitored and analyzed the battery recycling pretreatment process in a formal factory, and studied the pollution characteristics of particulate matter, heavy metals, and microplastics under different treatment stages.

Organic compost is a significant carrier of microplastics (MPs) entering agricultural soil. However, the extent of MPs pollution during composting, a widely employed organic waste treatment technology, remains unknown. This study investigated MPs dynamic pollution characteristics during composting and compost products using agricultural wastes as raw materials and quantitatively evaluated ecological risks of MPs pollution.
