Binary transition metal oxides with encouraging electrocatalyst properties have been suggested as electrode materials for supercapacitors and methanol oxidation. Hence, in this work, a binary mixed metal oxide based on nickel and manganese (MnNiO) and its hybrid with reduced graphene oxide were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. After physical and morphological characterization, the potential of these nanostructures was investigated for use as supercapacitor electrodes and methanol electro-oxidation. The results of the electrochemical analysis showed a substantial effect of adding rGO to the MnNiO. The MnNiO/rGO hybrid electrode supercapacitor exhibited good stability of 93% after 2000 consecutive CV cycles and a specific capacitance of 575 F gat the current density of 0.5 A g. Furthermore, the application of this hybrid nanomaterial in the methanol electro-oxidation reaction (MOR) indicated its appropriate electrochemical efficiency and stability in methanol oxidation. Our results show that MnNiO/rGO can be considered as a promising electrode material for energy applications.

Article Synopsis
  • - Surface morphology plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of electrocatalysts, and manipulating atomic-level structures can enhance their performance.
  • - The study focused on how heat treatment in a specific reductive atmosphere at 300 °C influences the arrangement of surface atoms in platinum thin-film catalysts, improving their catalytic properties.
  • - Results showed that increasing the proportion of (100) planes through thermal annealing can boost catalyst performance for methanol oxidation reactions significantly, highlighting a method for designing better electrocatalysts.

In this work, we present a theoretical investigation of the SrTiO perovskite-supported Pd catalyst in the methanol electro-oxidation reaction. In order to determine the metal-support interactions, we designed a system consisting of a Pd (100) double layer supported on one of the two possible terminations of the (100) perovskite surface. These terminations are characterized by different reducibilities of the layers directly interacting with the Pd bilayer and result in the difference in the stability of the surface-bound intermediates.

The energy crisis is the most urgent issue facing contemporary society and needs to be given top priority. As energy consumption rises, environmental pollution is becoming a serious issue. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have emerged as the most promising energy source for a variety of applications such as electric vehicles and portable devices.

Numerous studies reveal pollutants like clindamycin (CLD) in the environment, posing environmental and health risks. Conventional water treatment methods are ineffective at removing these contaminants, typically found in low concentrations. An innovative treatment approach is introduced through pre-concentration via adsorption, which is highly efficient, energy-saving, and reusable.

The shift toward renewable energy sources plays a central role in the quest for a circular economy. In this context, methyl formate (MF) has garnered attention as a compelling hydrogen carrier and alternative fuel, because of its remarkable characteristics (energy density, ease of storage and transport, and low boiling point). In this study, DFT calculations supported by online electrochemical mass spectroscopy (OE-MS) were performed to investigate the MF electro-oxidation (MFEO) on PtPdSn (111).
