Autonomic dysfunction is a common and early complication among patients with systemic sclerosis, suggesting that it may play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease and be a potential target for therapeutic interventions. Although the true prevalence of autonomic dysfunction among patients with systemic sclerosis is still unclear, it is estimated that as many as 80% of patients may be affected. Autonomic dysfunction may lead to widespread multi-organ dysfunction through its effects on the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, sweat and salivary glands, and pupils.

Background: Perioperative bleeding remains an important complication of cardiac surgery. Current guidelines support goal-directed use of coagulation factor concentrates in refractory bleeding, but the optimal strategy is unclear. Four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC) has theoretical advantages over recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) because of expanded mechanistic targets and lower rates of adverse events, but comparative data are limited.

Chemical-nose/tongue technologies are emerging as promising analytical tools for glycan analysis. After briefly introducing the importance of glycans and their analytical methods, including the lectin microarray (LMA) as one of the gold standards, the fundamental principles underlying chemical noses/tongues are explained and various applications for monosaccharides and glycans are introduced. Then, the similarities and differences of these two approaches are discussed.

Little is known about country-level procedural estimates and volumes needed to provide adequate population coverage. We evaluated annual cardiac procedural volumes for high-income countries and present target volumes for countries to work toward as part of universal health coverage agendas.

Despite the significant potential of short hairpin RNA (shRNA)-mediated gene therapy for various diseases, the clinical success of cancer treatment remains poor, partly because of low selectivity and low efficiency. In this study, an mRNA-initiated autonomous multi-shRNA nanofactory (RNF@CM) is designed for in vivo amplification imaging and precise cancer treatment. The RNF@CM consists of a gold nanoparticle core, an interlayer of two types of three-stranded DNA/RNA hybrid probes, one of which is bound to aptamer-inhibited DNA polymerases, and an outer layer of the cancer cell membrane.
