Ursolic and oleanolic acids are secondary plant metabolites that are known to be involved in the plant defence system against water loss and pathogens. Nowadays these triterpenoids are also regarded as potential pharmaceutical compounds and there is mounting experimental data that either purified compounds or triterpenoid-enriched plant extracts exert various beneficial effects, including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anticancer, on model systems of both human or animal origin. Some of those effects have been linked to the ability of ursolic and oleanolic acids to modulate intracellular antioxidant systems and also inflammation and cell death-related pathways. Therefore, our aim was to review current studies on the distribution of ursolic and oleanolic acids in plants, bioavailability and pharmacokinetic properties of these triterpenoids and their derivatives, and to discuss their neuroprotective effects in vitro and in vivo.

Active herbal ingredients are gaining recognition for their potent anti-tumor efficacy, attributable to various mechanisms including tumor cell inhibition, immune system activation, and tumor angiogenesis inhibition. Recent studies have revealed that numerous anti-tumor herbal ingredients, such as ginsenosides, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, and Angelica sinensis polysaccharides, can be utilized to develop smart drug carriers like liposomes, micelles, and nanoparticles. These carriers can deliver active herbal ingredients and co-deliver anti-tumor drugs to enhance drug accumulation at tumor sites, thereby improving anti-tumor efficacy.

The inhibition of HBV DNA and elimination of HBsAg has already been established as an indicator for HBV clinic cure, and a novel dual-targeting inhibitors of HBV polymerase/entry are designed and synthesized in this study. Pentacyclic triterpenes (PTs) scaffold of exhibiting a high affinity to NTCP, including glycyrrhitinic acid (GA), oleanolic acid (OA), ursolic acid (UA), and betulinic acid (BA) were linked neatly with the nucleoside drug zidovudine (AZT) through a molecular hybrid strategy to synthesize twenty of PTs-AZT conjugates for targeting HBV polymerase as well as sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP). The conjugates showed significant inhibitory effects on the secretion of HBsAg and HBeAg in HepG2.
