In this work, advanced polymer nanocomposites comprising of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and nanodiamonds (NDs) were developed using a single-step solution-casting method. The properties of the prepared PVA/NDs nanocomposites were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). It was revealed that the tensile strength improved dramatically with increasing ND content in the PVA matrix, suggesting a strong interaction between the NDs and the PVA. SEM, TEM, and SAXS showed that NDs were present in the form of agglomerates with an average size of ~60 nm with primary particles of diameter ~5 nm. These results showed that NDs could act as a good nanofiller for PVA in terms of improving its stability and mechanical properties.

Toxic acetone gas emissions and leakage are a potential threat to the environment and human health. Gas sensors founded on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have become an effective strategy for toxic gas detection with their mature process. In the present work, an efficient acetone gas sensor based on Au-modified ZnO porous nanofoam (Au/ZnO) is synthesized by polyvinylpyrrolidone-blowing followed by a calcination method.

Biomedical Application Prospects of Gadolinium Oxide Nanoparticles for Regenerative Medicine.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Department of Hospital Surgery, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Cosmetology and Cell Technology, Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University (RNRMU), 117997 Moscow, Russia.

Background/objectives: The aim was to study the possibilities of biomedical application of gadolinium oxide nanoparticles (GdO NPs) synthesized under industrial conditions, and evaluate their physicochemical properties, redox activity, biological activity, and safety using different human cell lines.

Methods: The powder of GdO NPs was obtained by a process of thermal decomposition of gadolinium carbonate precipitated from nitrate solution, and was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The redox activity of different concentrations of GdO NPs was studied by the optical spectroscopy (OS) method in the photochemical degradation process of methylene blue dye upon irradiation with an optical source.

Objectives: The antimicrobial, oxidative activities, and ecotoxicity of synthesized silver-loaded zeolites (X and ZSM-5(MFI), Si-to-Al ratios 12 and 25) were studied, linking antimicrobial properties to material structure and released active silver species.

Methods: The materials were characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM, and XRPD. All materials, with a silver content of 1-3%wt for the Ss and about 35%wt for the X-zeolites, were tested against and .

Porous Carbon Fabricated by Microbial Pretreatment of Brewer's Grain for the Improvement of Toluene Adsorption Performance.

Molecules

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Basin Agricultural Resource and Ecology of Jiangxi Province, College of Land Resource and Environment, Jiangxi Agricultural University, Nanchang 330045, China.

Porous activated carbons (AC-AN and AC-AO) for toluene adsorption were prepared starting from brewer's grain biomass pretreated with microorganisms ( van Tieghem for AC-AN and RIB40 for AC-AO). The structures and chemical properties of the three activated carbon materials (AC-AN, AC-AO, and AC that was not pretreated with microorganisms) were characterized by N adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption behavior of the three activated carbons for toluene was studied and correlated with the physical and chemical properties of these materials.

Relationship Between Elastic, Chemical, and Thermal Properties of SiO Flint Aggregate.

Molecules

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Cadi Ayyad University, Marrakech 40000, Morocco.

Understanding the relationship between elastic, chemical, and thermal properties is essential for the prevention of the behavior of SiO flint aggregates during their application. In fact, the elastic properties of silica depend on chemical and heat treatment. In order to identify the crystallite sizes for natural SiO before and after chemical treatment samples, Williamson-Hall plots and Scherer's formulas are used.
