Internal fixation is one of the most effective methods for the treatment of proximal femur fractures. The migration of implants after the operation can seriously affect the reduction of treatment and even cause complications. Traditional diagnosis methods can not directly measure the extent of displacement. Based on the analysis of Hansson pins, this paper proposes a measurement method based on three-dimensional matching, which uses computerized tomography (CT) images of different periods of patients after the operation to analyze the implants' migration in three-dimensional space with the characteristics of fast speed and intuitive results. The measurement results show that the method proposed in this paper has more minor errors, more flexible coordinate system conversion, and more explicit displacement analysis than the traditional method of manually finding references in CT images and measuring displacement.

High Rate of Complications With Early Conversion Hip Arthroplasty Following Fracture Treatment.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev

November 2024

From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Loyola University Health System, Maywood, IL (Dr. Grayson, Dr. Eikani, and Dr. Brown); and the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL (Ms. Benson and Mr. Jozefowski).

Background: Conversion total hip arthroplasty (THA) is associated with higher rates of complications compared with primary THA, with prior surgical fixation of fractures in the ipsilateral hip shown to further increase these rates. There is a scarcity of literature on the effect of timing of conversion THA on complication rates. In this study, we evaluated early (≤6 months of index surgery) and late (>6 months of index surgery) conversion to THA following prior fixation of the proximal femur or acetabulum.

Background: Predicting mortality and morbidity poses a significant challenge to physicians, leading to the development of various scoring systems. Among these, the hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte and platelet (HALP) score evaluates a patient's nutritional and immune status. The primary aim of this study was to determine the predictive effect of the HALP score on 30-day and 1-year mortality in elderly patients with proximal femoral fractures (PFFs).

Similar risks of complications and reoperation rates in proximal femur megaprostheses for oncological and non-oncological indications.

Int Orthop

January 2025

CHU de Nantes, Nantes University, CHU Nantes, Clinique Chirurgicale Orthopédique et Traumatologique, 1 Place Alexis Ricordeau, 44000, Nantes, France.

Purpose: Proximal femur megaprostheses (PFMPs) are used to manage large bone defects in both non-oncological indications (NOI) and oncological indications (OI). However, little is known about the comparative risks of reoperation and functional outcomes between these groups. This study aimed to evaluate the cumulative incidences of reoperation and functional results of PFMPs between NOI and OI.

Purpose Of The Study: Temporary hemiepiphyseodesis using figure-eight plates is currently one of the main surgical techniques to correct axial deformities of lower limbs in paediatric patients. Comprehensive analysis, correct indication and monitoring of treatment are the basic prerequisites for successful therapy. The aim of the study was to analyse parameters that could become an alternative to standard parameters used nowadays, namely the inserted screw angle (SA), and a new parameter - condylar ratio (CR).

The prevalence and outcomes of pre-admission vitamin D levels in the management of proximal femur fractures.

Aging Med (Milton)

December 2024

Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics Gateshead Health Foundation NHS Trust Gateshead UK.

Objectives: The prevalence of low Vitamin D levels (<30 nmol/L) is about 15.7% globally. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in elderly patients with fragility fractures of the hip by estimating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and to assess whether low vitamin D levels at the time of admission affect functional outcomes at 3 months and mortality at 28 days and 1 year.
