We present the modification of ethylene-propylene rubber (EPM) with vinyltetra-methydisiloxane (VTMDS) via reactive extrusion to create a new silicone-based material with the potential for high-performance applications in the automotive, industrial and biomedical sectors. The radical-initiated modification is achieved with a peroxide catalyst starting the grafting reaction. The preparation process of the VTMDS-grafted EPM was systematically investigated using process analytical technology (in-line Raman spectroscopy) and the statistical design of experiments (DoE). By applying an orthogonal factorial array based on a face-centered central composite experimental design, the identification, quantification and mathematical modeling of the effects of the process factors on the grafting result were undertaken. Based on response surface models, process windows were defined that yield high grafting degrees and good grafting efficiency in terms of grafting agent utilization. To control the grafting process in terms of grafting degree and grafting efficiency, the chemical changes taking place during the modification procedure in the extruder were observed in real-time using a spectroscopic in-line Raman probe which was directly inserted into the extruder. Successful grafting of the EPM was validated in the final product by H-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy.

The tablet diversion strategy, based on in-line near-infrared (NIR) tablet press feed frame measurements, can be a key component of both batch and continuous oral solid dose manufacturing processes. It enables real-time, high-frequency monitoring and control, enhancing process understanding and compliance compared to conventional interval-based sampling methods. Central to this strategy are NIR spectrometers, which serve as PAT systems for in-line blend uniformity monitoring in the feed of the tablet press.

This study used Raman and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to monitor small real-time changes in powder blends and tablets in low-dose pharmaceutical formulations. The research aims to enhance process analytical technology (PAT) in pharmaceutical manufacturing, ensuring high-quality and uniform products with applications to produce drugs with narrow therapeutic indices (NTI). The study utilizes Raman and NIR spatially resolved spectroscopy (SRS) techniques to monitor a moderate cohesive material's active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) concentrations during manufacturing.

Division of Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, USA.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) can severely impact functioning yet effective treatments are limited. Greater insight into the neurobiology underlying NDDs is critical to the development of successful treatments. Using a genetics-first approach, we investigated the potential of advanced diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) techniques to characterize the neural microstructure unique to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and Noonan syndrome (NS).

The current state-of-the art in pharmaceutical continuous film coating - A review.

Int J Pharm

January 2025

Department of Organic Chemistry and Technology, Faculty of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Műegyetem rkp. 3., H-1111 Budapest, Hungary.

In this decade, one of the major trends in the pharmaceutical industry is the adoption of continuous manufacturing. This requires the development of continuous equivalents of essential pharmaceutical processes such as film coating. The process of film coating is the last step of the processing of solid dosage forms and is critical because it determines the visual appearance of the end product, along with ensuring its stability and possibly even defining the rate of drug release.

Bio-based molecules with ionically bonded phosphorus toward ultra-high flame-retardant efficiency of PLA plastics.

Int J Biol Macromol

College of Materials Science and Engineering, Hubei Key Laboratory for New Textile Materials and Applications, Wuhan Textile University, Wuhan 430200, China. Electronic address:

The fire safety of polymer plastics has become a global consensus, and creating a more efficient flame-retardant network is in line with the trend. Here, a direct strategy for low usage of flame retardants and fire-resistant PLA plastics was proposed. The bio-based flame-retardant PDT, which was formed by ionic bonding of phytic acid and organic amine molecules, had high flame-retardant efficiency for PLA.
