Excessive UV solar radiation exposure causes human health risks; therefore, the study of multifunctional filters is important to skin UV protective ability and also to other beneficial activities to the human organism, such as reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for cellular damages. Potential multifunctional filters were obtained by intercalating of ferulate anions into layered simple metal hydroxides (LSH) through anion exchange and precipitation at constant pH methods. Ultrasound treatment was used in order to investigate the structural changes in LSH-ferulate materials. Structural and spectroscopic analyses show the formation of layered materials composed by a mixture of LSH intercalated with ferulate anions, where carboxylate groups of ferulate species interact with LSH layers. UV-VIS absorption spectra and SPF measurements indicate that LSH-ferulate systems have UV shielding capacity, mainly UVB protection. The results of reactive species assays show the ability of layered compounds in capture DPPH, ABTS, ROO, and HOCl/OCl reactive species. LSH-ferulate materials exhibit antioxidant activity and singular optical properties that enable their use as multifunctional filters.

Silicon photonic signal processors promise a new generation of signal processing hardware with significant advancements in processing bandwidth, low power consumption, and minimal latency. Programmable silicon photonic signal processors, facilitated by tuning elements, can reduce hardware development cycles and costs. However, traditional programmable photonic signal processors based on optical switches face scalability and performance challenges due to control complexity and transmission losses.

In this paper, we propose a novel structure of anisotropic graphene-based hyperbolic metamaterial (AGHMM) sandwiched as a defect between two one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) in the terahertz (THz) region. The proposed structure is numerically simulated and analyzed using the transfer matrix method, effective medium theory and three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain. The defect layer of AGHMM consists of graphene sheets separated by subwavelength dielectric spacers.

Multifunctional ZnO-Loaded Colloidosomes with Multiple Synergies as a UV Filter.

ZnO nanoparticles with high safety and stability are often used as active ingredients in sunscreens to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays. However, ZnO nanoparticles are easy to agglomerate, which will significantly affect the ultraviolet absorption and bacteriostatic properties, and the reactive oxygen species induced by the photocatalytic activity may result in irreversible secondary damage to the skin. Herein, the ZnO nanoparticles are dispersed uniformly on the surface of latex particles, and these composite particles are used as shell materials to construct self-assembled colloidosomes by high-gravity technology, which can improve the application properties with synergistic enrichment of the hollow structure.

Electronic address:

The advent of multifunctional nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) has led to the development of next-generation air filters that are ready to intercept fine particulate matters (PMs) and monitor the respiratory diseases. However, it is still challenging to fabricate biodegradable NFMs featuring the desirable combination of high filtration efficiencies, low air resistance, and intelligent real-time monitoring. Herein, a hierarchical nanopatterning approach was proposed to functionalize the stereocomplexed poly(lactic acid) (PLA) (SC-PLA) nanofibers via the combined electrospinning of SC-PLA and electrospray of CNT@ZIF-8 nanohybrids.

Drinking water is an essential daily intake to hydrate the body. It is conceivable that water, when endowed with antioxidant properties, will be the most natural radical terminator surpassing conventional pill-based or food-derived antioxidants. However, current end-of-pipe purification of municipal water generally depletes minerals pivotal for antioxidant potency.
