For the first time, a series of catechol-containing Schiff bases, tetrasubstituted at the lower rim thiacalix[4]arene derivatives in three stereoisomeric forms, , , and , were synthesized. The structure of the obtained compounds was proved by modern physical methods, such as NMR, IR spectroscopy, and HRMS. Selective recognition (K difference by three orders of magnitude) of copper (II) cation in the series of d-metal cations (Cu, Ni, Co, Zn) was shown by UV-vis spectroscopy. Copper (II) ions are coordinated at the nitrogen atom of the imine group and the nearest oxygen atom of the catechol fragment in the thiacalixarene derivatives. High thermal stable organic-inorganic copper-based materials were obtained on the base of + Cu (II) complexes.

The study presents a multifunctional catechol-modified chitosan (Chi-Ca)/oxidized dextran (Dex-CHO) hydrogel (CDP-PB) that possesses antibacterial, antioxidant, and pro-angiogenic properties, aimed at improving the healing of diabetic wounds. The achievement of the as-prepared CDP-PB hydrogel with superb antibacterial property (99.9 %) can be realized through the synergistic effect of phenylboronic acid-modified polyethyleneimine (PEI-PBA) and photothermal therapy (PTT) of polydopamine nanoparticles loaded with the nitric oxide (NO) donor BNN6 (PDA@BNN6).

The study of compounds able to interfere in various ways with amyloid aggregation is of paramount importance in amyloid research. Molecules characterized by a 4-thiaflavane skeleton have received great attention in chemical, medicinal, and pharmaceutical research. Such molecules, especially polyhydroxylated 4-thiaflavanes, can be considered as structural mimickers of several natural polyphenols that have been previously demonstrated to bind and impair amyloid fibril formation.

A novel approach to the synthesis of protein microcapsules is developed through template-mediated interfacial reaction. Protein-doped CaCO3 templates are first synthetized via coprecipitation and then coated with a catechol-containing alginate (AlgDA) layer. Afterward, the templates are exposed to ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium (EDTA) solution to dissolve CaCO3.
