Penetrating thoracic injuries, especially those affecting cardiac structures, are rare but can be life-threatening, requiring urgent medical care. Right atrium injuries pose significant risks, including rapid blood loss, cardiac tamponade, hemodynamic instability, and, subsequently, potential death. We report the case of a 24-year-old male patient with stab wounds leading to a right-sided chest penetration three hours prior to presentation.

Sternotomy is rarely performed for veterinary therapeutic or recovery models in quadrupeds because of difficulties with breathing, ambulation, and pain control. Central cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is infrequent and typically performed through full thoracotomies. Experienced clinical surgeons and perfusionists should provide guidance for new therapeutic interventions and translational research.

TAM receptors mediate the Fpr2-driven pain resolution and fibrinolysis after nerve injury.

Acta Neuropathol

December 2024

Centre for Interdisciplinary Pain Medicine, Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care, Emergency and Pain Medicine, University Hospital Würzburg, Würzburg, Germany.

Nerve injury causes neuropathic pain and multilevel nerve barrier disruption. Nerve barriers consist of perineurial, endothelial and myelin barriers. So far, it is unclear whether resealing nerve barriers fosters pain resolution and recovery.

GPVI-mediated thrombus stabilization of shear-induced platelet aggregates in a microfluidic stenosis.

Biophys J

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania; Department of Surgery, Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, Pennsylvania. Electronic address:

Supraphysiological shear rates (>2000 s) amplify von Willebrand factor unfurling and increase platelet activation and adhesion. These elevated shear rates and shear rate gradients also play a role in shear-induced platelet aggregation (SIPA). The primary objective of this study is to investigate the contributions of major binding receptors to platelet deposition and SIPA in a stenotic model.
