Hole-edge crack quantification of bolt joints is critical for monitoring and estimating structural integrity of aircraft. The paper proposes a new triangle eddy current sensor array for the purpose of increasing the level of quantifying hole-edge crack parameters, especially, the crack angle. The new senor array consists of triangular coils instead of planar rectangular coils. The configuration of the novel sensor array, including the excitation current directions and the excitation winding shape, is optimized by simulation. The ability of the proposed sensing film to identify the crack parameters has been verified by finite element simulations and experiments. Results shows that triangular coils with same current directions in circumferentially adjacent coils and opposite current directions in axially adjacent coils achieve better performance in sensor linearity and resolution compared to rectangular coils. In addition, it has also been proved that the sensing film has a good potential to identify the crack depth and length.

This paper aimed to study the fatigue crack growth behavior of diffusion-bonded titanium alloy laminates (DB-TAL) with preset unbonded areas using an experimental method to understand the toughening mechanisms of presetting unbonded areas in DB-TAL. For two series of specimens of DB-TAL with preset unbonded areas with an open hole, which have a pre-notch at the open hole edge, fatigue experiments under tension-tension cyclic loading were conducted. The fatigue crack growth process, the crack growth rate, and the stress intensity factor on the crack front were analyzed.

This paper presents a novel framework for probabilistic crack size quantification using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The key idea is to use a high-order extended finite element method (XFEM) together with a transfer (T)-matrix method to analyze the reflection intensity spectra of FBG sensors, for various crack sizes. Compared with the standard FEM, the XFEM offers two superior capabilities: (i) a more accurate representation of fields in the vicinity of the crack tip singularity and (ii) alleviation of the need for costly re-meshing as the crack size changes.

This paper proposes a Lamb wave-particle filter (LW-PF)-based method for on-line prognosis of fatigue crack propagation which takes advantages of the possibility of on-line monitoring to evaluate the actual crack length and uses a particle filter to deal with the crack evolution and monitoring uncertainties.

The objective of this study was to calculate stresses produced by polymerization contraction in regions surrounding a dental resin composite restoration. Initial cracks were made with a Vickers indenter at various distances from the edge of a cylindrical hole in a soda-lime glass disk.
