The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of plantar pressure and reaction force measured using the Moticon and Pedar-x sensor insoles while rowing on a Concept2 ergometer. Nineteen participants performed four 500 m trials of ergometer rowing at 22-24 strokes/min; two trials wearing Moticon insoles and two wearing Pedar-x insoles in a randomised order. Moticon and Pedar-x insoles both showed moderate to strong test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.57-0.92) for mean and peak plantar pressure and reaction force. Paired t-test demonstrated a significant difference ( < 0.001) between Moticon and Pedar-x insoles, effect size showed a large bias (ES > 1.13), and Pearson's correlation (r < 0.37) showed poor agreement for all plantar pressure and reaction force variables. Compared to Pedar-x, the Moticon insoles demonstrated poor validity, however, the Moticon insoles had strong reliability. Due to poor validity, caution should be used when considering Moticon insoles to assess changes in pressure and force reliably over time, across multiple trials or sessions. Moticon's wireless and user-friendly application would be beneficial for assessing and monitoring biomechanical parameters in rowing if validity between measures of interest and Moticon's results can be established.

Effects of Foot Somatosensory Training on Plantar Somatosensory Function.

Cureus

December 2024

Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Nursing and Rehabilitation, Chubu Gakuin University, Seki, JPN.

Background Declines in foot somatosensory function can negatively impact balance and daily activities, particularly in older adults and individuals with neurological conditions. Despite this, effective physical therapeutic interventions to improve foot sensory function are limited. This study assessed the effects of targeted foot somatosensory training on plantar sensory function in healthy young adults.

Background: Few studies have assessed vertical ground reaction force, contact time, contact area, and center of pressure during gait in the early phase post-total hip arthroplasty. This study aimed to investigate whether these parameters are more pronounced in participants post-total hip arthroplasty compared to healthy controls.

Methods: We included 22 female participants who underwent total hip arthroplasty (age, 68.

Background: Loss or displacement of a fat pad on the foot increases plantar pressure, leading to pain and plantar ulcers. These ulcers, especially in patients with diabetic neuropathy, have high recurrence rates, often resulting in amputations. Standard of care focuses on reducing plantar pressure with shoe padding or orthotic devices, leaving the restoration of the fat pad as an unmet medical need.

Comparison of the effects of orthoses on hallux valgus angle and plantar pressure in individuals with hallux valgus.

Prosthet Orthot Int

December 2024

Department of Orthosis and Prosthetics, School of Health Sciences, Istanbul Medipol University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: Hallux valgus (HV) is a condition characterized by the lateral deviation of the first phalanx and medial deviation of the first metatarsal, leading to subluxation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Various orthotic applications are employed in the treatment of HV deformity. This study aimed to compare the effects of a toe separator (TS) and dynamic orthosis (DO) on hallux valgus angle (HVA), plantar pressure (PP), and quality of life (QoL).

Background: The foot is an essential organ for human locomotion. Assessment of plantar pressure distribution could provide key clinical information on foot functions. However, the mechanism that links body mass index to injury is not clear.
