Inspired by calcium-induced reversible assembly and disassembly of membrane proteins found in nature, here we developed a phosphorylated amphiphile (PA) that contains an oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) unit as a hydrophobic unit and a phosphate ester group as a hydrophilic calcium-binding unit. We demonstrated that PA can assemble and disassemble in a reversible manner in response to the sequential addition of calcium chloride and ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid within the lipid bilayer membranes for the first time as a synthetic molecule.

Dexmedetomidine is widely used to induce sedation in the perioperative period. This study examined the effect of hypothermia (33 and 25 °C) on dexmedetomidine-induced contraction in an endothelium-intact aorta with or without the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). In addition, the effect of hypothermia on the contraction induced by dexmedetomidine in an endothelium-denuded aorta with or without a calcium-free Krebs solution was examined.

The mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) is a calcium-dependent, ion non-selective membrane pore with a wide range of functions. Although the MPTP has been studied for more than 50 years, its molecular structure remains unclear. Short-term (reversible) opening of the MPTP protects cells from oxidative damage and enables the efflux of Ca ions from the mitochondrial matrix and cell signaling.

Background: Pathological cardiac hypertrophy is one of the main activators of heart failure. Currently, no drug can completely reverse or inhibit the development of pathological cardiac hypertrophy. To this end, we proposed a silicate ion therapy based on extract derived from calcium silicate (CS) bioceramics for the treatment of angiotensin II (Ang II) induced cardiac hypertrophy.
