Objective: The serum glucose/potassium ratio (GPR) is a potential prognostic predictor for acute brain injury-related diseases. We calculated the serum GPR in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and explored its prognostic value for long-term prognoses and ICH severity.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study consecutively included 92 patients with ICH and 92 healthy controls. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score, and hematoma volume were used to assess severity. A modified Rankin Scale score > 2 at 90 days post-stroke was defined as a poor outcome.

Results: The serum GPR was significantly higher in patients than controls. The serum GPR was weakly correlated with the NIHSS score, GCS score, and hematoma volume. The serum GPR, GCS score, and hematoma volume were independently associated with poor outcomes. In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the serum GPR remarkably discriminated patients at risk of poor outcomes at 90 days. The serum GPR significantly improved the prognostic predictive capability of hematoma volume and tended to increase that of the GCS score.

Conclusion: Serum GPR is an easily obtained clinical variable for predicting clinical outcomes after ICH.

Staging Chronic Hepatitis B Related Liver Fibrosis with Diffusion-weighted MRI-based Virtual Elastography: Comparisons with Serum Fibrosis Indexes.

Clin Radiol

November 2024

Department of Radiology, Shanghai Institute of Medical Imaging, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Aim: To evaluate and compare the diagnostic performance of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-based virtual magnetic resonance (MR) elastography and serum fibrosis indexes for staging liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 145 patients with CHB. Virtual shear modulus (μ) was derived from DWI acquisition with b values of 200 and 1500/mm.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between serum glucose/potassium ratio (GPR) and adverse outcomes in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
  • Data was taken from the TOPCAT trial, with the primary focus on cardiovascular mortality, cardiac arrest, and hospitalization rates related to HF.
  • Results indicate that higher GPR levels are associated with significant risks for poor outcomes, particularly for patients without diabetes or with less severe heart failure symptoms, highlighting a J-shaped relationship between GPR and prognosis.

Background: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic liver inflammatory disease mediated by autoimmune reactions, the pathogenesis of AIH is probably related to the imbalance of intestinal flora. Yinchenhao decoction (YCHD) has been used to relieve AIH. However, the mechanisms underpinning YCHD's hepatoprotective effects with the gut microbito have not been fully revealed.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disrupts gut microbiota and reduces the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), worsening kidney damage.
  • The study explored whether Astragalus polysaccharide (APS), a component of Chinese medicine, can improve gut microbiota and SCFA production to slow CKD progression in mice.
  • Findings showed that APS supplementation lowered harmful substances in the blood, improved kidney health, increased the presence of SCFA-producing bacteria, and elevated G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) linked to kidney function.

The effect of serum glucose-to-potassium ratio (GPR) on cerebrovascular diseases has been previously validated. However, the value of the GPR in patients with severe intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) requiring ICU admission remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between the GPR and the clinical prognosis of critically ill patients with ICH.
