Capturing deformation of bone using strain gauges is still a common approach in biomechanics. So far, the bone surfaces had to be sanded and cleaned using various solvents prior to attaching the sensors using cyanoacrylate. This work proposes a novel approach employing common bonding procedures to enamel and dentin as used in restorative dentistry. Bovine ribs were obtained and osteotomies were created following clinical protocols for dental implant insertion. A unidirectional strain gauge was attached to the outer surface of the bone specimens using the steps of acid etching with phosphoric acid, application of a three-bottle dentin adhesive and light curing. Emerging strains were then captured during implant insertion as well as during static loading of the implants in a universal testing machine. The method described here allowed for the reliable fixation of strain gauges on unaltered bone surfaces. Both, compressive and tensile strains emerging in the surrounding of the dental implants could be captured.

The hydraulic column is a core component in the coal mine support system, however, the real-time monitoring of the hydraulic column during the service process of the hydraulic support faces challenges. To address these issues, a high-precision stress mapping method of hydraulic column is proposed. The hydraulic column loss function was constructed to guide the data-driven model training, and the cylinder stress mechanism model was established by using the elastic-plastic theory of thick-walled cylinder.

The impact of rock bolts on the mechanical behavior of nonpersistent joints, including the intricate interactions between the joints, rock bridges, and rock bolts, has received limited investigation despite their effectiveness in reinforcing rock mass discontinuities. In order to tackle this issue, a variety of normal stresses were applied during direct shear tests conducted on artificial rock-like specimens with nonpersistent joints, both bolted and unbolted. Meanwhile, to measure the deformation in the rock bridge and joint plane region, a set of strain gauges were implemented.

In this study, we developed a novel composite catalytic hydrogel, which integrates excellent mechanical properties, catalytic activity, and sensing performance. Discarded hydrogel sensors are reused as templates for in-situ generation of metal nanoparticles, and multifunctional hydrogels combining sensing and catalysis are realized. Polyacrylamide (PAM) provides a three-dimensional network structure, while octadecyl methacrylate (SMA) acts as a hydrophobic association center, enhancing the structural stability of the hydrogel.

This paper addresses the trade-off between sensitivity and sensing range in strain sensors, while introducing additional functionalities through an innovative 4D printing approach. The resulting ultraflexible sensor integrates carbon nanotubes/liquid metal hybrids and iron powders within an Ecoflex matrix. The optimization of this composition enables the creation of an uncured resin ideal for Direct Ink Writing (DIW) and a cured sensor with exceptional electromechanical, thermal, and magnetic performance.
