Histochemical study of liver tissue from thalassemic patients.

Birth Defects Orig Artic Ser

Department of Pathology, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Published: August 1988

The livers of 30 cases of advanced thalassemia were studied pathologically. Severe degrees of hemosiderosis and fibrosis were found in liver cells and Kupffer cells in most cases. Various histochemical stains have been used to determine the characteristics of FAB and to grade degrees of iron deposit and fibrosis. The correlation between hemosiderosis and fibrosis as well as the presence of FAB are described.

A positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that devastated the world. While this is a respiratory virus, one feature of the SARS-CoV-2 infection was recognized to cause pathogenesis of other organs. Because the membrane fusion protein of SARS-CoV-2, the spike protein, binds to its major host cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) that regulates a critical mediator of cardiovascular diseases, angiotensin II, COVID-19 is largely associated with vascular pathologies.

Background: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is rarer in children (chILD) than adults, but with increasing diagnostic awareness, more cases are being discovered. chILD prognosis is often poor, but increasing numbers are now surviving into adulthood.

Aim: To characterize chILD-survivors and identify their impact on adult-ILD centers.

Continuous vaso-occlusive and inflammatory processes cause extensive end-organ damage in adults with sickle cell disease (SCD), and there is little evidence that longterm hydroxyurea therapy prevents this. In initial trials, P-selectin blockade with crizanlizumab reduced SCD vaso-occlusive crisis frequency, and interleukin (IL)-1β inhibition in SCD patients, using canakinumab, lowered inflammatory markers. We used murine SCD models to examine the effects of acute and chronic blockade of Pselectin and of IL-1β on vaso-occlusive events, their inflammatory profile and organ health.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates a young boy with severe autoimmune conditions who was found to have a germline gain-of-function mutation in the STAT3 gene through whole-exome sequencing.* -
  • Treatment with the targeted therapy tocilizumab led to a reduction in hospital stays and slowed the progression of pulmonary fibrosis, showing promise for managing his condition without increasing steroid use.* -
  • The findings suggest that genetic testing and functional analysis of STAT3 mutations are important for diagnosing early-onset autoimmune diseases and for considering targeted treatment options.*

Avian Diabetes Mellitus: A Review.

J Avian Med Surg

April 2024

Zoological Society London, Wildlife Health Services, Regent's Park, London, NW1 4RY, United Kingdom.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an uncommon, poorly documented metabolic disorder of birds. Extrapolating knowledge from DM in mammals is challenging because of marked differences in avian physiology and metabolism. A literature review from December 1991 to January 2022 identified 14 publications covering 16 diabetic birds, 63% (10/16) of which belonged to the order Psittaciformes with as the predominant genus.
