Particulate matter (PM) is a risk factor for the deterioration of atopic dermatitis (AD) and certain constituents of PM can induce inflammation via oxidative stress. Natural functional foods, including antioxidative blueberry and black rice, can be the best alternative for the development of AD therapy. Thus, we investigated whether PM regulated the expression of proinflammatory cytokines involved in the progression of AD and further investigated the improvement effect of fermented blueberry and black rice extract (FBBBR) containing Lactobacillus plantarum MG4221 in vitro and in vivo. The FBBBR treatment significantly ameliorated skin inflammation compared with the control treatments via regulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathways in PM-treated HaCaT cells. In PM/dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-treated NC/Nga mice, the oral administration of FBBBR significantly decreased transepidermal water loss and erythema, the incidence of scratching behavior, and the production of serum immunoglobin E and T helper 2-associated cytokine and, similar to dexamethasone treatment, up-regulated the protein expression of filaggrin and involucrin in skin tissue. Syringic acid and kuromanin, standard compounds found in FBBBR, significantly decreased the interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and IL-8 levels in PM-treated HaCaT cells. Therefore, we can suggest that FBBBR may serve as an important functional food for AD.

Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is an important fruit crop for pick-your-own agritourism farms in the Midwest. Berries are highly valued for their rich phenolic content, particularly anthocyanins, which are known for their antioxidative properties and potential effectiveness against depression. This study identified and quantified anthocyanin profiles in blueberry, blackberry, black mulberry, and cranberry using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), followed by in vivo evaluation of their antidepressant-like activities. Blueberry and black mulberry showed significant levels of cyanidin-3-galactoside and cyanidin.

Importance: Black or African American (hereinafter, Black) and Hispanic or Latino/a/x (hereinafter, Latinx) adults are disproportionally affected by Alzheimer disease, but most research studies do not enroll adequate numbers of both of these populations. The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative-3 (ADNI3) launched a diversity taskforce to pilot a multipronged effort to increase the study inclusion of Black and Latinx older adults.
Objective: To describe and evaluate the culturally informed and community-engaged inclusion efforts to increase the screening and enrollment of Black and Latinx older adults in ADNI3.

Identification of anthocyanin relies heavily on authentic anthocyanin standards and the detection instruments employed, and both of these made tremendous improvement in the past decades. Here, with 118 authentic anthocyanin standards and state-of-the-art detection method, we comprehensively analyze the anthocyanin composition of the most commonly seen, deep-colored berries and grains in China. Cyanidin-3--glucoside is the overwhelmingly major anthocyanin in all the berries and grains examined, including blue honeysuckle, blueberry, cranberry, elderberry, mulberry, black rice, and black soybean, which accounts for an average of 82% of the total anthocyanins with a little variation between them.
