Article Abstract

Blast injuries seen in various accidents involving pressurized containers like gas cylinders, tires, et cetera, and acts of terrorism. The associated factors can vary from poor handling of equipment to inadequate safety precautions. These injuries include a variety of injuries, such as, injuries due to shock wave, burns, fractures, et cetera, involving multi-organ systems, especially lungs and hollow organs, due to the high-pressurized shock wave. The presented case is of the death of a 24-years-old male as a result of a blast of the compressor present in the AC outdoor unit during the filling of the gas. Here, the body showed injuries due to shock wave, secondary impact, tertiary impact because of fall on the ground, and quaternary injuries due to burns. The cause of death was Blast lung associated with Subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Evaluating the effectiveness of handheld ultrasound in primary blast lung injury: a comprehensive study.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Military Traffic Injury Prevention and Control, Daping Hospital, Army Medical University, No. 10 Changjiang Branch Road, Yuzhong District, Chongqing, 400042, China.

The incidence of blast injuries has been rising globally, particularly affecting the lungs due to their vulnerability. Primary blast lung injury (PBLI) is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, while early diagnostic methods are limited. With advancements in medical technology, and portable handheld ultrasound devices, the efficacy of ultrasound in detecting occult lung injuries early remains unclear.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy (FURL) and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in the treatment of ureteral calculi based on decision tree model.

Methods: A total of 600 patients with ureteral calculi, including 289 treated with FURL and 311 cases with ESWL in Anqing Municipal Hospital from June 2021 to August 2023, were selected as study subjects. Perioperative indicators and stone clearance rate of the two groups were compared, and the preoperative and postoperative (24 and 72 hours) changes of serum creatinine, cystatin C (Cys-C) and microalbumin were observed.

Based on the symmetric initiation mechanism of double-wing cracks in coal rock mass induced by high-pressure electro-recoil water pressure, fracturing experiments have been performed on coal rock mass under different water pressures and discharge conditions using high-voltage electric pulse hydraulic fracturing devices. Combined with CT scans, the crack spatial distribution inside the post-break coal rock mass was analyzed and found that the edge of the water injection hole is prone to produce double-wing cracks along the drilling hole diameter. ABAQUS is used to verify the physical test and extend the test conditions, the geometric parameter change, morphological expansion rule and crack initiation mechanism of double-wing crack in coal rock mass under different discharge conditions and ground stress conditions are studied.
