Tandem catalysis enables the rapid construction of complex architectures from simple building blocks. This Perspective shares our interest in combining stereoselective hydrogenation with transformations such as isomerization, oxidation, and epimerization to solve diverse challenges. We highlight the use of tandem hydrogenation for preparing complex natural products from simple prochiral building blocks and present tandem catalysis involving transfer hydrogenation and dynamic kinetic resolution. Finally, we underline recent breakthroughs and opportunities for asymmetric hydrogenation.

A mixed-ligand-based thermo-chemically robust and undulated metal-organic framework (MOF) is developed that embraces carboxamide moiety-grafted porous channels and activation-induced generation of open-metal site (OMS). The guest-free MOF acts as an outstanding heterogeneous catalyst in Hantzsch condensation for electronically assorted substrates with low catalyst loading and short duration under greener conditions than the reported materials. Besides Lewis acidic OMS, the carboxamide group activates the substrate via two-point hydrogen bonding, highlighting the effectiveness of custom-made functionalities in this multi-component reaction.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to highly value-added C2+ fuels or chemicals is a promising pathway to address environment issues and energy crisis. In the periodic table, Cu as only the candidate can convert CO2 to C2+ products such as C2H4 and C2H5OH due to the suitable absorption energy to reaction intermediate. Application of Cu is limited for its low activity and poor selectivity.

In industry, the two important nitrile starting materials, adiponitrile and 2-methylglutaronitrile, are primarily manufactured through the well-known DuPont process, which consists of a tandem sequence including first hydrocyanation, isomerization and second hydrocyanation. However, this mature process has the intrinsic defects of step efficiency and regioselectivity. Herein, we report a nickel-catalyzed divergent, one-step double hydrocyanation of 1,3-butadiene to produce either adiponitrile or 2-methylglutaronitrile in high regioselectivity.

The dehydrogenative cross-coupling reaction is the premier route for synthesizing important 4-quinazolinone drugs. However, it usually requires high reaction temperature and long reaction time, and the yield of the final product is low. Here two stable and photosensitive covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), TAPP-An and TAPP-Cu-An are purposefully designed and constructed to serve as unprecedented heterogeneous tandem catalysts to complete dehydrogenative cross-coupling reactions in a short time and under mild reaction conditions (room temperature and light), leading to the high-efficient photosynthesis of 4-quinazolinones.

The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) stands as one of the most frequently employed rapid detection techniques for both chemical and biological contaminants. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and hydrogen peroxide (HO), serving as signal generators, play indispensable roles throughout the entire ELISA process. However, HRP and HO exhibit high sensitivity to elevated temperatures, hindering the broader utilization and transportation of ELISA.
