Evaluation of Polyvinyl Alcohol as Binder during Continuous Twin Screw Wet Granulation.

Pharmaceutics

June 2024

Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Technology, Department of Pharmaceutics, Ghent University, Ottergemsesteenweg 460, 9000 Ghent, Belgium.

Binder selection is a crucial step in continuous twin-screw wet granulation (TSWG), as the material experiences a much shorter residence time (2-40 s) in the granulator barrel compared to batch-wise granulation processes. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) 4-88 was identified as an effective binder during TSWG, but the potential of other PVA grades-differing in polymerization and hydrolysis degree-has not yet been studied. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the potential of different PVA grades as a binder during TSWG.

Controlled supramolecular polymerization of π-systems.

Supramolecular polymers, albeit having precise internal order, largely lack precision in the mesoscopic scale because in most examples supramolecular polymerization occurs under thermodynamic control through spontaneous self-assembly. Recent reports have exemplified that by varying experimental parameters including cooling rate, solvent composition, interplay of intra- vs. inter-molecular H-bonding and others, it is possible to retard the spontaneous nucleation, and isolate a dormant kinetically controlled monomeric/aggregated state which in turn can serve as the monomer pool to undergo controlled supramolecular polymerization (CSP) through a chain-growth mechanism in the presence of an aggregated/molecular initiator (seed) or by an external stimuli like light.

Granular activated sludge has gained increasing interest due to its potential in treating wastewater in a compact and efficient way. It is well-established that activated sludge can form granules under certain environmental conditions such as batch-wise operation with feast-famine feeding, high hydrodynamic shear forces, and short settling time which select for dense microbial aggregates. Aerobic granules with stable structure and functionality have been obtained with a range of different wastewaters seeded with different sources of sludge at different operational conditions, but the microbial communities developed differed substantially.

Cyanobacterial blooms are global phenomena that can occur in calm and nutrient-rich (eutrophic) fresh and marine waters. Human exposure to cyanobacteria and their biologically active products is possible during water sports and various water activities, or by ingestion of contaminated water. Although the vast majority of harmful cyanobacterial products are confined to the interior of the cells, these are eventually released into the surrounding water following natural or artificially induced cell death.
