Modification of Erroneous and Correct Digital Texts.

Entropy (Basel)

November 2024

Faculty of Informatics, University of Debrecen, 4032 Debrecen, Hungary.

The end-user paradox and the illusion of digital prosperity reveal the contradictory situation in which both non-professional and professional computer scientists and engineers seem satisfied with digital development but unaware of the magnitude of waste generated by end-users and their digital artifacts. To measure this waste and to reveal end-users' problem-solving strategies, our research group set up an objective measuring system that can calculate the entropy of digital texts (EDT). To calculate EDT, a testing process of 53 participants was launched where erroneous and correct natural language digital texts were modified according to the requirements of the tasks.

Beat gestures and prosodic prominence interactively influence language comprehension.

Cognition

March 2025

Max Plank Institute for Psycholinguistics, Wundtlaan 1, 6525 XD Nijmegen, The Netherlands; Radboud University Nijmegen, Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, 6525 EN Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Face-to-face communication is not only about 'what' is said but also 'how' it is said, both in speech and bodily signals. Beat gestures are rhythmic hand movements that typically accompany prosodic prominence in conversation. Yet, it is still unclear how beat gestures influence language comprehension.

The ghost of selective inference in spatiotemporal trend analysis.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville (IRNAS), Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Av. Reina Mercedes 10, 41012 Seville, Spain. Electronic address:

In spatiotemporal trend analysis, selective inference occurs when researchers are only interested in significant trends based on a fixed threshold (α, often 0.05), without considering the total number of statistical tests performed. Using simultaneous inference in gridded data involves thousands of trend tests, one for each pixel, leading to multiple testing or multiplicity problems.

A Right Ear Advantage (REA) is well-established in perceptual tasks but it has been found also during imagery. It is ascribed to the left temporoparietal activity for language, and it can be absent/reversed in some clinical conditions including auditory hallucinations. We applied 1-Hz repetitive TMS over TP3/TP4 (left/right language areas) identified through neuronavigation in 18 healthy participants, before administering a modified white noise (WN) speech illusion paradigm: a voice was presented at one ear, at the same or lower intensities with respect to binaural WN.

Visually induced involuntary arm, head, and torso movements.

Exp Brain Res

November 2024

Ashton Graybiel Spatial Orientation Laboratory, MS 033, Brandeis University, 415 South Street, Waltham, MA, 02454, USA.

We explored in 75 s long trials the effects of visually induced self-rotation and displacement (SR&D) on the horizontally extended right arm of standing subjects (N = 12). A "tool condition" was included in which subjects held a long rod. The extent of arm movement was contingent on whether the arm was extended out Freely or Pointing at a briefly proprioceptively specified target position.
