Background: Hepatic artery thrombosis (HAT), a serious complication after orthotopic liver transplantation, almost always leads to morbidity and mortality without urgent revascularization or retransplantation, especially if HAT occurs within a few days after transplantation.

Case Presentation: Herein we describe a case report of an orthotopic liver transplantation patient surviving without hepatic artery flow due to HAT on postoperative day 1. Reanastomosis, thrombectomy, and intra-arterial thrombolysis were performed, but only retrograde arterial flow by Doppler ultrasound, not by angiography, could be demonstrated in the hepatic artery. This case report is in compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki and the Declaration of Istanbul.

Conclusion: Based on the evidence from this patient, we believe that patients with failed revascularization can experience a long-term survival with conservative treatment. Retransplantation should be evaluated based on laboratory findings because graft function in individual patients can recover.

December 2024

Department of Surgery, Section of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation, University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Background: Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is increasingly used to preserve and assess donor livers prior to transplantation. Due to its success, it is expected that more centers will start using this technology. However, NMP may also cause adverse effects.

Zinc pretreatment for protection against intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

World J Gastrointest Surg

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Organ Failure Research, Department of General Surgery, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Precision Medicine for Gastrointestinal Tumor, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510515, Guangdong Province, China.

Background: Intestinal ischemiareperfusion (I/R) injury (II/RI) is a critical condition that results in oxidative stress, inflammation, and damage to multiple organs. Zinc, an essential trace element, offers protective benefits in several tissues during I/R injury, but its effects on intestinal II/RI remain unclear.

Aim: To investigate the effects of zinc pretreatment on II/RI and associated multiorgan damage.

Age-dependent changes in diameters of abdominal visceral arteries in children.

December 2024

Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatric Surgery, Van Yüzüncü Yil University, Van, Turkey.

Purpose: The diameters of the abdominal aorta and its branches are affected by demographic properties of patients like age, sex or body mass index. Some researchers use the body of the first lumbar vertebra (L1) as an anatomical indicator to create an exact standard for diagnosing arterial aneurysms or stenoses. In this regard, this work designed to uncover relations of abdominal visceral arteries with L1 in normal children using their abdominopelvic computed tomography images.

Computational exploration of injection strategies for improving medicine distribution in the liver.

Comput Biol Med

December 2024

Faculty of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering, University of Tabriz, Tabriz, Iran. Electronic address:

Background And Objectives: The liver, a vital metabolic organ, is always susceptible to various diseases that ultimately lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, acute liver failure, chronic liver failure, and even cancer. Optimal and specific medicine delivery in various diseases, hepatectomy, shunt placement, and other surgical interventions to reduce liver damage, transplantation, optimal preservation, and revival of the donated organ all rely on a complete understanding of perfusion and mass transfer in the liver. This study aims to simulate the computational fluid dynamics of perfusion and the temporal-spatial distribution of a medicine in a healthy liver to evaluate the hemodynamic characteristics of flow and medicine transport with the purpose of more effective liver treatment.

Hepatopancreatobiliary Center, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, School of Clinical Medicine, Institute for Precision Medicine, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Background: Intraoperative hemorrhage is one of the major complications of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) and is mainly caused by technical difficulties of the surgical procedure besides primary liver diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and clinical effects of a novel proceduralized donor liver back-table preparation (DLBTP) technique for use in OLT.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted between January 2018 and June 2020 based on patients who had undergone OLT.
