We present the one-orbital ensemble self-consistent field (OE-SCF), an alternative orbital-free DFT solver that extends the applicability of DFT to beyond nanoscale system sizes, retaining the accuracy required to be predictive. OE-SCF treats the Pauli potential as an external potential updating it iteratively, dramatically outperforming current solvers because only few iterations are needed to reach convergence. OE-SCF enabled us to carry out the largest simulations for silicon-based materials to date by employing only 1 CPU. We computed the energy of bulk-cut Si nanoparticles as a function of their diameter up to 16 nm, and the polarization and interface charge transfer when a Si slab is sandwiched between two metal slabs where lattice matching mandated a large contact area. Additionally, OE-SCF opens the door to adopting even more accurate functionals in orbital-free DFT simulations while still tackling large system sizes.

Charge transfer interaction revisited by a Fermi-Dirac derived approach.

Context: In this article, we adapt a recent proposition to use a Fermi-Dirac-type population scheme on Kohn-Sham molecular orbitals to the case of an interaction with a thermalised electrode. This allows to derive a fundamental non-linear equation linking the chemical potential of the electrode and the amount of charge transferred to the system under study, hence allows to quantify the propensity to charge transfer (philicity). This methodology is applied to a large set of common electrophiles and nucleophiles, showing decent relation with more standard philicity descriptors.

Revisiting Artifacts of Kohn-Sham Density Functionals for Biosimulation.

We revisit the problem of unphysical charge density delocalization/fractionalization induced by the self-interaction error of common approximate Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory functionals on simulation of small to medium-sized proteins in a vacuum. Aside from producing unphysical electron densities and total energies, the vanishing of the HOMO-LUMO gap associated with the unphysical charge delocalization leads to an unphysical low-energy spectrum and catastrophic failure of most popular solvers for the KS self-consistent field (SCF) problem. We apply a robust quasi-Newton SCF solver [ 2024, 26, 6557] to obtain solutions for some of these difficult cases.

We report APW+lo (augmented plane wave plus local orbital) density functional theory (DFT) calculations of large molecular systems using the domain specific SIRIUS multi-functional DFT package. The APW and FLAPW (full potential linearized APW) task and data parallelism options and the advanced eigen-system solver provided by SIRIUS can be exploited for performance gains in ground state Kohn-Sham calculations on large systems. This approach is distinct from our prior use of SIRIUS as a library backend to another APW+lo or FLAPW code.

The combination of density functional theory with dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) has become a powerful first-principles approach to tackle strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. The wide use of this approach relies on robust and easy-to-use implementations, and its implementation in various numerical frameworks will increase its applicability on the one hand and help crosscheck the validity of the obtained results on the other. In this work, we develop a formalism within the linear combination of numerical atomic orbital (NAO) basis set framework, which allows for merging of NAO-based DFT codes with DMFT quantum impurity solvers.

Phosphorus is a key and vital element for a diverse set of important biological molecules, being indispensable for life as we know. A deeper comprehension of its role in astrochemistry and atmospheric chemistry may aid in finding answers to how this element became available on Earth. The PO molecule is one of the main reservoirs of phosphorus in the interstellar medium (ISM), and a better understanding of the mechanisms and rate coefficients for its formation in the ISM is important for modelling its abundances.
