The architectural design of nanocatalysts plays a critical role in the achievement of high densities of active sites but current technologies are hindered by process complexity and limited scaleability. The present work introduces a rapid, flexible, and template-free method to synthesize three-dimensional (3D), mesoporous, CeO nanostructures comprised of extremely thin holey two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets of centimetre-scale. The process leverages the controlled conversion of stacked nanosheets of a newly developed Ce-based coordination polymer into a range of stable oxide morphologies controllably differentiated by the oxidation kinetics. The resultant polycrystalline, hybrid, 2D-3D CeO exhibits high densities of defects and surface area as high as 251 m g, which yield an outstanding CO conversion performance (T = 148 °C) for all oxides. Modification by the creation of heterojunction nanostructures using transition metal oxides (TMOs) results in further improvements in performance (T = 88 °C), which are interpreted in terms of the active sites associated with the TMOs that are identified through structural analyses and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. This unparalleled catalytic performance for CO conversion is possible through the ultra-high surface areas, defect densities, and pore volumes. This technology offers the capacity to establish efficient pathways to engineer nanostructures of advanced functionalities for catalysis.

The rapid complexation of photogenerated electrons-holes with copper (Cu) greatly limits the large-scale application of cuprous oxide (CuO) as a photocatalyst. Therefore, using a hydrothermal method, a type Ⅱ heterojunction structure was constructed by modifying CuO with cerium (IV) oxide (CeO). The CeO/CuO heterojunction photocatalyst effectively increased the photogenerated electron density and reduced the surface transfer impedance.

Pseudomorphic Transformation in Nanostructured Thiophene-Based Materials.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) - Istituto per la Sintesi Organica e la Fotoreattività (ISOF), via Piero Gobetti 101, 40129 Bologna, Italy.

This study reveals the capability of nanostructured organic materials to undergo pseudomorphic transformations, a ubiquitous phenomenon occurring in the mineral kingdom that involves the replacement of a mineral phase with a new one while retaining the original shape and volume. Specifically, it is demonstrated that the postoxidation process induced by HOF·CHCN on preformed thiophene-based 1D nanostructures preserves their macro/microscopic morphology while remarkably altering their electro-optical properties by forming a new oxygenated phase. Experimental evidence proves that this transformation proceeds via an interface-coupled dissolution-precipitation mechanism, leading to the growth of a porous oxidized shell that varies in thickness with exposure time, enveloping the pristine smooth core.

The design and development of particulate photocatalysts has been an attractive strategy to incorporate earth-abundant metal ions to water splitting devices. Herein, we synthesized CoFe-Prussian blue (PB) coated ZnO origami core-shell nanostructures (PB@ZnO) with different mass ratio of PB components and investigated their photocatalytic water oxidation activities in the presence of an electron scavenger. Photocatalytic experiments reveal that the integration of PB on ZnO boosts the oxygen evolution rate by a factor of ~2.

TiO has broad prospects in reducing the safety risks posed by emerging pollutants in water environments. However, the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers limits the activity and photon utilization efficiency of TiO. In this study, mesoporous TiO (m-TiO) and ultra-thin g-CN nanosheets were composited using a hydrothermal method, with the m-TiO tightly and uniformly wrapped by g-CN.
