It is well established that anisotropic molecules do have a preferential direction of motion at short time scales that is washed out at larger times by Brownian noise. Anisotropic molecular motors are able to move at lower temperatures when Brownian noise is smaller suggesting the possibility of oriented motion for larger time scales. We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate that possibility, calculating the displacements of a simple flat folding molecular nano-swimmer embedded in soft matter. We find actually that the motor displacement is oriented in the direction of its length. We note that the observed orientation of the displacement explains the experimental polarization effect in surface relief gratings formation in agreement with the caterpillar model for azobenzene SRG formation mechanism. That result also suggests a simple route for the creation of molecular motors with oriented displacements.

Stored elastic bending tension as a mediator of embryonic body folding.

Cell Rep

Department of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa 31096, Israel. Electronic address:

During development, amniote vertebrate embryos transform from a flat sheet into a three-dimensional cylindrical form through ventral folding of the lateral sides of the sheet (the lateral plate [LP]) and their fusion in the ventral midline. Using a chick embryo slice system, we find that the flat stage is actually a poised balance of opposing dorsal and ventral elastic bending tensions. An intact extracellular matrix (ECM) is required for generating tension, as localized digestion of ECM dissipates tension, while removal of endoderm or ectoderm layers has no significant effect.

This article presents a new parametric method for shaping flat transverse frame structural systems supporting thin-walled roofs made of flat sheets folded unidirectionally and transformed elastically to various shell forms. The parameterization was limited to one independent variable, that is the stiffness of the support joints. For different discrete values of simulated stiffness, the surface areas of the cross sections of the tensile and compressed elements and the section modulus of the bending elements were calculated so as to obtain the optimized work of the frame and its elements in the assumed load environment.

Engineering the Self-Assembly Pathways of POSS-Peptide Amphiphiles to Form Diverse Cross-β Structures.

Cross-β structures are crucial in driving protein folding and aggregation. However, due to their strong aggregating tendency, the precise control of the self-assembly of β-sheet-forming peptides remains a challenge. We propose a molecular geometry strategy to study and control the self-assembly of cross-β structures.

Purpose: To describe a surgical technique for retinal detachment (RD) with undetected retinal breaks, which combines pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and external subretinal fluid (SRF) drainage.

Methods: In this retrospective observational study, patients with diagnosis of RD with undetected retinal breaks were enrolled. Standard three-port 25 Gauge (G) core and peripheral PPV was performed.
